Thought this might be helpfull - sorry if it's a re-post. I emailed Pathmark and asked them what their coupon policy was, and this was the response I got:

Our coupon policy is as follows:

Marnufacturer coupons are accepted at face value in all stores without a limit.
Stores featuring double coupons can double up to the amount advertised for that particular store.
Stores honoring doubel coupons can accept up to four coupons for four individually purchased items (ex; if you purchase five cans of Maxwell House coffee and have five coupons, the cashier can double four manufacturer coupons and take the fifth at face value.)
Customers do not get money back if the coupon is greater than the retail price.
Competitors coupons are not accepted.
