I'm 99% sure that it would go through the register (as I have used them in the past), but you are saying that you think the cashier would object?

I have had no difficulty using them in Michigan stores, Ohio stores or Fort Wayne Indiana stores ever.

sorry to hear that... I frequently go to the Meijers on Alexis (just past Detroit street) and have never had any trouble there.
