Fyi Got a Question About Your Warranty or Performance Plan?

The following was taken from Best Buy's website. Provides a great overview of warranties, Performance Service Plans and Product Replacement Plans. Still have a question? Best Buy's contact info is listed below.

Warranties and Performance Plan Basics

Enjoy some peace of mind by learning about your new product's manufacturer warranty—and extending your coverage with a Best Buy Performance Plan.

Manufacturer Warranties
Any manufacturer's warranty on a product will apply when purchased through BestBuy.com. To receive a free copy of the manufacturer's warranty details prior to purchase, call 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289) or write to:

Attn: Warranty Request
Customer Care, BestBuy.com
P.O. Box 949
Minneapolis, MN 55440

You can also contact the manufacturer directly (see list of manufacturers) or visit your local Best Buy store with warranty-related questions.

Performance Plans
We offer two types of protection plans that go above and beyond the manufacturer's warranty for most products we sell, each designed to ensure you get the best possible performance from your Best Buy purchases. You can purchase these plans both online and in-store at the time of purchase, and in-store only if you purchase a plan at any other time within the product's return period (typically listed on the product's receipt).

Both plans are fully underwritten, feature 24/7/365 service, and involve no deductibles or hidden charges.

Performance Service Plan (PSP)
This fully transferable plan includes prompt, professional product service. Coverage begins the day of your purchase, and includes:
Protection from dust, heat and humidity
Failures due to normal wear and tear/usage
Failures due to power surges
Full parts and labor
No-lemon guarantee
PSPs typically do not cover installation, which is available from Best Buy for an additional charge.

To file a PSP claim: If you have a "carry-in" plan, bring your covered product, your plan's receipt and your PSP brochure into your local Best Buy store. If you have "in-home" PSP coverage, call 1-888- BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289) to arrange for service.

Note: Best Buy PSPs cover replacement parts only if a valid claim is submitted and an authorized technician makes the repair (see terms and conditions for details). Any actions completed outside of the specified terms and conditions of the PSP will not be covered, whether the item is serviced at home or in a store.

Product Replacement Plan (PRP)
Don't get it fixed. Get it replaced. This plan ensures a full replacement of covered products. Features include:
Easy fulfillment
Flexibility - we'll give you a Best Buy gift card to choose your own replacement
Nationwide redemption
If you purchased the item in store, you can file a PRP claim online. Call 1-888-539-6883 for all BestBuy.com purchases.

I just bought my first BB product with a PRP

I have followed the BB 'PRP', which you listed in your post, for several months now, on several sites and posts. I wish BB offered it when I bought my LCD HDTV almost 2 yrs ago. Maybe I wouldn't still be fighting with the TV Mfg, for over 18 months now, with the MFG warranty.

Information I have gathered from various sites, and from asking at my local BB last week, when I bought my Garmin nuvi 200, is:
- You pay extra for the 'PRP', kinda like insurance. If it breaks, stops working, or for any reason it doesn't function like it's suppose to, or becomes defective (i.e: TV screen) - take it in, tell them, and they will give you a replacement, on the spot. (This does not apply to you taking it back in a year and saying 'I don't like it anymore.' or you intentionally damaging it just to get your money back - as explained to be by my local BB. [They're not fools, so don't be stupid enough to try it.])
- When I asked about the BB Gift Card, given when no replacement was available, I was told that it is a BB Gift Card. Do what you want with it.
- 'PRP' replacement period, for my Garmin was '2 years', and I paid $19 + tax, on the $99 purchase price. If it breaks, or stops, or whatever, during the next 2 years, just take it in and get it replaced, or the gift card (as was explained to me), as your post stated. No hassle with taking/sending it in, mailing it in to who-knows-where, waiting for repairs, etc.
- A 'PRP' on an item begins from the 'date-of-purchase'. So, this, apparently, replaces the usual '1-year Mfg Warranty' and the BB 'PRP' takes it's place. (So, you won't have to send your TV from FL to CA, for $70, only to get another defective item, like I did, and still fight with the Mfg.! [Personal Venting, sorry 'bout that.]) However, from what I gather, you still do have your initial Mfg warranty in place for the 1st year (or what ever it is) if the BB 'PRP' program fails.
- It was mentioned, though . . If you bring an item back with a problem, within a few months of the PRP expiration date, they may want to look at what the problem is. (Makes sense to me. Keep someone from trying to rip them off by getting a 'new' one just because the 'PRP' is about to run out.)
- The 'PRP' warranty applies Only to that item. If you take it in and get a replacement you will have to get/purchase another 'PRP' on the replacement item. Ask!

( This is offered IMHO and for Informational Purposes Only - YMMV (but, it shouldn't)! Ask at your local BB about the 'PRP'. I have no doubt that 'PRP' charges will vary by product price. ) It's your call. Read up on it! ASK! Hope this helps, at least a little.
