How to buy land (bargain-like of course)

Any thoughts on where to go to find it cheap? Are there Auctions? I have to believe there are places in Maine, Central Pennsylvania, Canada, etc where you can get an acre easily for $1,000.

Thanks in advance,

Big Jim

Probably depends on what you need it for! I think you can get cheap land in the boonies!

I am definitely interested in cheap and somewhere East. My thought is that there are auctions for land, but I do not know where to go to find these. I bet there are local land sales that they never think to advertise in places like Tampa, FL. I just don't know where to look.

I would doubt Central PA. That's were I'm from and land is at a premium now. Not sure about any of the other places. Sorry

Wow Trish! I am shocked about Central PA. I thought there was almost nothing between Harrisburg and Erie except State College. Is it really that expensive up there?

My husbands cousin here in Arkansas is currently selling 98 acres and 2 houses...the land has $60,000 worth of mature, loggable timber on it and there is also a private lake located on it...the asking price...$160,000. I ahve 30 acres more or less and a 3,000sq ft house that is secluded and has outbuildings and is beautiful...it sold for $55,000 in 1985...the current appraisal is now right at 100,000. Some land just to the east of my property just sold for $800 per acre. There is some cheap land around here.

I think there is cheap and expensive land here in SC, just depends on who is selling and how far in the boonies you want to stay.

LOSorry JIm for laughing...it was a little late and I was punchy. I live in Harrisburg, so I can speak for South Central PA. It is overdevelopment at it's finest around here.....and now a lot fo the enviromentalists are attempting with the help of the state govt to preserve open land, farm land etc. I will ask around, someone in my family might know more about auctions, buying land cheaply, etc.

Thanks for all these great replies!

It is not so much where I want to live, I just want to hold onto some land. Something I can call my own even if I never build on it. Maybe I will sell it in 50 years. :P

Anything East of the Mississippi works great for me.

Thanks again!

Big Jim

Trish: My grandparents live in Harrisburg, and I read recently that property there was seriously undervalued. They say Harrisburg will only be going up up and up.
