I have a friend that works at walmart & he said that they had him take a huge bag of coupons to the shredder. I thought maybe they were other store Q's that the just rpiced matched or something. He seemed to think this is what they do with all the Q's they get instead of mail them in to be reimbersed. Has anyone else heard anything about this? I would think it would be a huge waste of money if they don't turn them in. We have a ton of couponers in town & I don't even want to imagine the amount of money being thrown away if this is true. I'm curious if anyone has worked at a walmart & seen the same thing.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to think that WalMart has bullied the mfrs. into some sort of special arrangement for coupon reimbursement whereby they don't have to send the coupons to the clearinghouse but still get reimbursed.

From what I can remember, the coupons are electronically submitted once they are scanned. The cashiers turn in the coupons so that if there are any discrepancies, it can be physically looked at.

This is completely false. I work in the accounting office at walmart, the coupons are but in a mailer bag and then sent to the clearing house to get reimburst. they get sent out every monday morning. perhaps they were all fradulent or expired coupons the store received.

Is it possible that different stores do different things, according to size/market? I was told by the cash office (when I worked at Walmart) that the electronic submission method was the way it was done at our store. They could have been making that whole elaborate thing up, though.

I also worked in the cash office many years ago. The coupons were counted in the cash drawers and had to match the register's log. The coupons were then put in a bag and sent to a clearing house. It's possible this has changed since my employment there though.

Actually it would make sense if the coupons were submitted electronically if you really think about it...I can understand mailing for reimbursement back in day..but with the technology we have available; electronic makes perfect sense

Well, and it might have been coupons from unsold newspapers. Sometime last year there was an article about stores committing coupon fraud by sending in coupons from their unsold newspapers to get reimbursed for coupon use that never happened. I don't know if Walmart was one of the stores cited - it wasn't nation wide, just a few stores - but maybe there is now some sort of rule that they have to shred rather than throw-away the coupons from unsold papers.
