Possible New Walmart Policy for Cashers

I went in to Wal-Mart today to pick up my custom order of j&j first aid kits. I was checking out at the customer service desk and using coupons to pay for my full order. The Asst. Manager was there to help with the transaction. The new policy that most walmarts will have to follow "at least mine is going to":
The cashier must scan 1 item and them scan 1 coupon. This will allow them to know if a coupon was used on an item if the item is being returned. Walmart is being screwed because of people buying items with coupons and returning them later to get cash back. So if you are using a lot of coupons you might just ask how the cashier wants the coupons. Do they want them all at the end of the transaction or with each item that the coupon goes too. My experience was great today and got paid to shop today!

This will be a huge PITA for most people that coupon. When I go grocery shopping and have $200 worth of coupons that I use, having to sort them all out and lay them out with the groceries is not feasable HEck, I don;t even sort my groceries on the belt, I just toss them up there.

If the cashier wants to sort them out, more power to her/him. I give them a stack and they can sort them. Not my job to keep them in order. Harsh, but honest.

Yes it was slow. They scanned all 220 items and I handed 201 coupons to them and they had to void and rescan all of them one at a time 200 of the items were the same item. It took forever.

I used to tape each coupon to the item it was intended for as I put it in the cart. That way I didn't have to search through a pile of q's to find one at a time.

It was a pain, but not terrible.

As I set each item on the belt, I'd pull the coupon off and fold the tape over, then set it on top of the item.

Whether you tape them on or search for each coupon when you get to the checkout, it's hard to keep up with the cashier, so the belt never gets full - which means you can't watch the monitor as each coupon is being scanned.

You really have to keep your cart and coupons organized too. You don't want to separate the two items that go with a BOGO q'pon.

It sure seems kind of silly to revert back to this, considering the things the computer can read from each bar code and how it can keep track of what's been purchased.

I ordered 200 of them. The heath and beauty manager was excited that I could get them all free with coupons she told me to order anything any time. In all every thing went well. I just hated waiting to do it one by one

My Walmart has the newer cashiers do coupons this way. It's easier for the newbies to keep track of the coupons and to make sure they scan all of them. Once the cashier is more comfortable handling coupons they don't have to process a order this way but can if they want to.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but how is WM "being screwed" by a customer returning an item they used a coupon for? I would assume that WM is still able to be reimbursed for the coupon from the manufacturer. I'm not at all surprised that some people would do this for a quick buck, but the way I see it is the manufacturer is the one being screwed, not the store.

If for some crazy reason I ever have to return an item and WM tries this stunt then I can be a PITA too and request my coupon to be returned to me as well.

That is what I said. Of course they couldn't give me a straight answer to the complaint. I would be asking for my coupon back too.

It is a nightmare I am not liking the idea at all but I work there and I see all the returns coming back and I know how to find the coupons on the receipt and I hear them tell me I didn't use a coupon for that and when I figure it all out they are making 50 to 100 bucks in using their coupons and then returning it. We throw all the food out and any medicine's that leave the store this then causes the prices of all the items to go up due to loss. It breaks my heart to see all the food that comes back because people over buy or just don't want it any more how about donating it and helping someone else out you can get a tax right off for the stuff. I had a guy tell me no I just want the money back. I am a firm believer is Karma and I see the selfishness in the world even more now adays it is a sad world we live in and I still help my neighbors, boy scouts, troops, family, and the food bank because there is to much hate and greed and not enough compassion.

I am just wondering how you are able to special order. My WalMart is very coupon friendly, but no one seems to know how to order ahead of time but then be able to pay at the store. If I order online, I have to pay in advance which means no coupons.

TIA

They don't donate it because the point of buying it with coupons was to convert the coupons to cash. If you keep up with the news you can't help but notice all the theft going on. Flash robs in Chicago, copper wire thefts. The total lawlessness is working its way down from the elites and bankers to the middle class.

Any way you look at it they are still getting re-imbursed plus .08 on each Q.I was there yesterday to get the Advil deal the cashier put up a bit of a fuss went to the MGR came back and said they would adjust the price down, whatever fine with me,but she started to put 20 Q's in the drawer and I said uh oh no you dont...I expect you to write the price adjustment on each of the Q's, she looked at me like oh no I told her why am I getting a price adjustment and then you submit the Q for the full value ,to me thats Q fraud. So I stayed there untill she did all 20.

I think it would make more sense for walmart to just update their POS(point of sale) software at the register. A lot of store have their recepits showing the item that was scanned at the current selling price and then the coupon or whatever discount that was applied without having to scan one item and then a coupon. This would make it easier for the cashier that would be returning items but also for the shopper. We could've verify each coupon got scanned without having to watch the screen like a hawk .

I have a problem with them adjusting the Q down. According to their Coupon Policy, which I just today printed off their website, it says

Quote:
If coupon value exceeds the price of the item, the excess may be given to the customer as cash or applied toward the basket purchase.
To me this reads that they shouldn't be adjusting it down, but giving you the overage.

I really don't think it matters if they write a different amount on the coupon. More likely than not they are still getting reimbursed for the full value of the coupon because that's how the reimbursement system is set up.

Sounds to me like they need to change their return policy to really address this problem. If they limit the amount of returns on items purchased using coupons they'll be stopping the people who are abusing the system. Then those of us who occasionally return something because there was a problem won't be getting punished for others behavior. (I pity the customer service person who has to try and tell me they're not going to refund the coupon amount. It will NOT be pretty. )

And it sure wouldn't hurt for them to update their registers to attach the coupons automatically like Target's do. (Well, most of the time anyway. Heaven knows their system isn't perfect either. )

I totally understand this. It is a pain but people trying to get over make it hard on the rest of us. And for those who say the store isn't losing money - you must be joking of course they are. Even if they get reimbursed for an item but you return it for cash and that money comes out of their bottom line they are going to take a loss.

Think about it the next time you purchase something, then taking it back for cash. The argument that the store gets reimbursed doesn't cover the cost of the return. A few bad apples will spoil the bunch in this case. And why wouldn't you help the cashier to put everything together instead of standing their wasting time? If they can't find an item and you can't use the coupon who will lose?

I can understand how WM is losing money on returns for items they can't resell, like food and meds, but honestly it's hard for me to feel bad for WM when they are such a wasteful store to begin with. How much stuff do they throw in the trash every day rather than donating? If they were taking such a loss, maybe they should check into donating and getting a tax write off.
I was looking at some clearance stuff last week but even on clearance it wasn't a great deal so I mentioned that I would wait for it to be marked down a little further and the WM employee told me they won't mark it down any more than what it already was, but that they would throw it away instead. SO WASTEFUL!

This makes me think maybe we should be dumpster diving for thrown away product instead of throw away inserts

I think the problem with donating it would be people would still return it, we have an agency in our town that adopts kids each year and buys whats on their wish list they mark through all the barcodes or cut them off so parents cant return the items (parents fill out the wishlist so all sizes should be correct every year the same parents return all the toys their kids get (we are a very small town so every one is related to everyone unless you moved here which is apprently rare)
