New Registers Crashing...Possible Solution?

Has anyone else experienced the new registers crashing when doing RR deals? In the past 2 months, its happened to me about 10 times. When it first happened, the cashier scanned all my RRs/coupons and I went to pay and a message appeared on her screen saying something like System Error, the register must be restarted, call the help desk for support...or something to that effect. We tried at 2 different registers and the same thing happened so I just had them void the order and left. Since then, it has happened several more times. A few days ago, I was reading another message board and someone suggested that the problem usually occurs when the long bar code on the RR is scanned instead of the short one. I didn't think much of it until yesterday when I crashed another register. I did notice the cashier was scanning the long barcode so when the register re-started, I had him scan the short bar codes on the RRs and voila, no crashes! Happened to me again today, long bar codes scanned, system crashes. I suggested short bar codes be scanned, transaction goes through fine. I can't be 100% certain that this is the solution, but so far it has worked for me. Hope this helps anyone else who has experienced this!

Happened yesterday to me. Manager came and redid it all and added all the q's and rr together(24.00) and just hard keyed 24.00 as a q and all worked fine. Wierd. She did say the company is aware of the problem.

It happens to me everytime I shop at night. I usually go in at 9pm and when I checkout, usually while scanning in my RR, the register will freeze, then shut down I guess. Takes about 20min for them to reboot it. The night manager always jokes about how I come in at night and break their registers with my coupons.

Thanks for the info--I will try that next time I crash the system! I've probably checked out 10 times with new registers and crashed 3 or 4 times.

It has happened to me several times already, and last night the AM asked me if I had "bought" the RR's on ebay. He said the system is crashing because people are counterfitting the RR's and the errors in the long bar code are what's making the system crash.

Now, I'm a Walgreens employee and very well known by this AM. I told him he was full of ...it and the reason the system is crashing is because of the system, not because of counterfit RR's. He just had them manually key in the coupons. Next time I'll ask them to cover the long bar code and see what happens.

Read that it does work better if they scan the short bar code and cover up the long bar code.

This has happened to me several times too and not just at one store. What I have observed is that it happens when I'm using RR's that expire that same day. So, when the system finally comes back up and we re-ring everything and then scan my coupons and RR's that I'm using to pay, they manually enter the last 1 or 2 RR's that crashed the system and everything works fine.

Very interesting! I crashed two different registers on Friday paying with RRs that probably expired that day (possibly Saturday, can't remember exactly). After the first crash, I asked the supervisor to cover the long barcode and she said oh no, it was card I was paying with. Yeah, my debit card that I use at gas stations--grocery stores--drugstores--big box stores--every day of the week is mysteriously crashing their system.

After the second register froze, she took me to Cosmetics and covered the long barcodes. Worked like a charm!

If it's really the date issue, sounds like a very simple change to the (programming) code! Hope somebody from Wags is paying attention! (P.S. Their system testing people really fell down on the job with this one)

AMAZING SIDE NOTE: When the supervisor and cashier began moving me to Photo after the first crash, they didn't try to bring my coupons. When I pointed out that I had paid with about $22 in coupons, the supervisor asked the cashier where they were and he started calmly digging them out of the garbage. She just about had a heart attack. He claimed he was told to throw away all coupons, including RRs! I'm thinking he misunderstood about Wags coupons vs. everything else. So really, it was very fortunate that I crashed the system! (Though not for the loooong line of customers behind me who were just trying to buy a Mother's Day card.)

I have noticed some of my cashiers fold the RR in half to easily scan the short code. Now I know why!

I work at wags and this happens often!! They are working on the problem. I don't know exactly why the registers crash, but it has to do with the multiple RR's and q's used in a particular way.. Don't know how to avoid it so we just move to another register with all coupons and products if it occurs.

I'm sorry that cashier "threw away" the coupons!! Every night we put the coupons and RR's in an envelope and send them back to the companies so we can be reimbursed. I bet that guy was saving them for his use or truly didn't know. Many employees at my store have been fired for stealing q's and RR's from work or even if a customer doesn't want it they CAN NOT take it. Supposedly they track them..?!!? Whatever haha if some one doesnt want it I'll use it for the next customer or give to a customer. I mean how would they know someone gave it I another person to use it??!? Oh well. :-)

This happened to me 4x and the manager came over and manually changed the prices on my transaction but charged me twice on my Starbucks coffee plus crv so I tried explaining that she was wrong and was over charging me but she didn't believe me. She explained how she had to manually change the prices to give me credit for my coupons and blamed my coupons for crashing the system. I was so upset but I saw no point in arguing with her so I just left. She stole $5 +crv & tax from me. It was the first time this happened to me and honestly I didn't know what to do. So beware and I hope this doesn't happen to you.

Thank you op. Now I can suggest what to do before calling the manager
