If your system is running slow or you are getting scary messages, try this:

1. Shut your computer down completely and then turn it back on.

2. Right click on "My Computer" and choose properties. Then click the performance tab, your system resources should be over 90% if there not go to step 3 if they are have
a cup of coffee and pat yourself on the back for being a good housekeeper.

3. Go to the start button and then Run, type in msconfig.

4. Click the startup tab and uncheck everything that you do not want running when your computer starts up. The less the better but leave System tray and Scan Registry, as they are important. ( This does not delete programs but simply stops them running automatically in the background using valuable resources. If you make a mistake you can turn them back on again later.) You may also want to leave all your virus scan stuff on

5. Click Apply and then OK, tell your computer its ok to restart. You will notice it running faster already as it re boots.

6. Next click Start, Find, Files or folders and in the named area type *.tmp make sure the look in box is set to all drives and including subfolders is checked.

7. Click Find Now

8. Click the top file on the list, hold down the left shift key and click the last file, this selects all the files In between then right click and choose delete.

9. Repeat this for *.chk and delete them.

10. Close the find window.

11. Open your Internet browser and empty out the cache (Temporary Internet files) on Internet explorer this will be under Tools, Internet options.

12. Close your browser.

13. Open your Email program and empty out the deleted items folder.

14. Close the mail program

15. Go to your desktop and empty the trash can (Right click it and choose empty)

16. Turn off any screen saver you have by right clicking the desktop and choose property, hit the screen saver tab and choose None.

17. Hit apply then OK

18. Hold down the ctrl button and the alt button and del all at once.

19. Your task manager will appear.

20. End task on everything that is running except Systray and Explorer. You will need to do ctrl alt del several times to do this.

21. Hit start, Programs, Accessories, System tools and chose scan disk, its fine to leave it on default settings this could take a while, especially if you haven't done it before.( Go make a coffee and let it finish completely)

22. Hit Start, Programs, Accessories, system tools again and choose Defrag set it to your C drive and start, This will also take a long time if you haven't done it before so maybe you should do this before going to bed and let it do its stuff while you sleep. Take heart though it will get quicker if you do it regularly.

23. Hard boot your machine again and take another look at your resources, much better than last time you looked I bet.

You now have a nice clean fast operating computer that will do your bidding without crashing as often.

Note you should make the effort to do this every week. And particularly if you notice your system is getting slower or your available recourses are getting low.
