Yeah, I wasn't overly impressed. She was shopping at Kroger and saved 71%. I can do better than that!

How many appliances did everyone go unplug during the first commercial break? I actually unplugged 6 things, and when my load of wash is done I will unplug that washer and ditto for the dryer. I am ashamed to say I am an electricity hog.

I can't get to most of my outlets! I know that's awful, but they are all behind heavy things!

I unplugged my fridge and my freezer too! LOL That should REALLY make my electric bill go down ALOT! : ![]() Seriously tho, I did unplug a few things, like blinking clocks that I never set because everytime I do our power goes out! LOL I also unplugged the microwave, I hear that still uses alot of juice even when not in use. Other than the things I am using right now, like my puter, I highly doubt I will be unplugging after I shut it off because OH MY that would be such a pain everyday to have to crawl under my desk and plug it in. LOL I also am in the process of changing all my lightbulbs over to the spiral ones. The first one I changed was the outside light. And a light that is used frequently. Lets all see if we can come up with some other ideas! |

I completely get the outlets behind heavy objects. Isn't that always the way! We have been using 90% those cfl bulbs for about 8 months now. I am NOT seeing any difference in my electricity portion of my bill though. Doodlebug, I hear ya on the computer plug. I don't want to crawl under mine either. Too many darn cords to get entangled in!! Scary. Keep the ideas flowing. Any little bit of advice, I am all for it! |

I have a switch inside my fridge it says reduce exterior moisture/energy saver and I always check when I open it to make sure it is on energy saver. I also make sure the fridge is set on 4 1/2 which is the recomendation for my fridge. I also never use the heat/dry cycle on my dishwasher. I have one night light on in the kitchen to see in the middle of the night. I always make sure the outside lights are off unless I know company is coming, or its close to the time DH is getting home. I also only use half of what the recomendations is for laundry soap and fabric softner. I invested in one of those wooden clothes dryer racks, and hang up all socks and underwear. I went thru the house and got a bunch of hangers and I hang up t-shirts because they really don't take long to dry, and then whatever else I can't hang up I do use the dryer but cut the normal time in half what it would be for the entire load. And if I am doing laundry I try to do numerous loads at once, because once the dryer is heated, you can cut the time on your drying because its already heated up. ![]() I do alot of things and still can't figure out why my bill is so much. Last month my bill was outrageous, and then this month it went down $50. It was $187 and everytime I see that dang thing in the mailbox I choke. LOL I also have a big printer, its a Oki laser printer and I always turn it off at night, and sometimes I find that I go for days and not use it at all so it's already off. We try to do alot of things to save money, like use your drying towel after shower/bath more than once..I mean you are clean when you get out! LOL I save envelopes that come in the mail with junk in them, throw that out and I put coupons in them for friends, etc, etc. I have more things we do, but can't think of them all at the moment. Am I crazy? Anyone else got any good ideas? |

I was not impressed with the show either. I was hoping that they would do more on the coupons, stores, doubles, and things like that. Ok, now we have to convince Karen to go on Oprah, and show them how's it's done! LOL Sorry to pick on you Karen. Lynda |

She said she pays 5.00 a month for her cell phone and only uses it for emergency's and her minutes roll over, but she did say she also has a house phone, but she never said what she pays for that...maybe she could save more money by only having her cell phone, and not the house phone....

the most impressive thing to me was the unplugging lady. I need to do that. I have a tivo though so I don't want to turn off the tv. But some I think I'll try. Washer and dryer would be really hard to get to, I'd have to pull them out and it's not like you can put them on a power strip. Do they use much if you don't have fancy digital ones? I don't see how the dial kind could use much with them not running. I'm so guilty on the computer, never was on the printer until I started here. I'm using CFLs in almost everything, not the DR that has a dimmer, the dimming CFLs were expensive. I've been using them since they first came out. I have some that are older than my 11 yr old son. They've come a long way, they are a much nicer light now. Not sure what I save but I'm short, I like not having to climb on a stepladder to change them . I found ones that were 150 watt-equivalent to use in my dark laundry room that has two socket fixtures. What a difference, so much brighter and you can put the higher equivalent ones in fixtures that only allow say 100 watts because they only use say 22 watts, kwim? So I like that, I like bright light for reading so I can put the 100 watt-equivalents in my 60 watt max lamps. Otherwise, I didn't learn anything i didn't already learn on here. The blonde coupon lady says she saved 72k in 15 years, all I could think was heck, there's someone on here who's saved 28k so far this year at CVS. Plus, she didn't have specific tips. For someone like me with no doubles store, she would've made me think I shouldn't even bother trying, kwim? Anyway, this site is way better so thank you again for having it. |

For everyone trying to figure out to unplug electronics behind heavy things. You can find surge protectors with long cords, just flip the switch off when you are not using those items. I am definately not climbing behind the tv wall unit everynight, but I do reach down and turn the whole thing off. I could save a ton on electric if I could get the FIL and SIL to move out of my basement.

I started out with Qwest for $10 a month for 500 minutes. Then they were telling me that I couldn't have than plan anymore after having it for 4 years. So I told them that I was switching carriers and they gave it to me for $20 for 500 minutes including long distance. Now I don't get any "free" minutes for late night calling or family to family calling, but this works for me. I tend to only use 400 to 450 minutes per month and that is if I do some calling down to KellyMarie or Monica. ![]() Oh...I still have the same phone from 7 years ago also. Kelly, Monica, and Lynda can verify that. ![]() Quote:

Pick on me all you want Lynda. I didn't think the show was all that because they really didn't go into detail, but then you could loose a huge audience if they weren't interested. Though why would you be tuned in if you weren't. ![]() I know that anyone who is on AFC didn't really learn anything from the show about using coupons. Now the house swap is new to me. ![]() Quote:
