Stockpiling pet food?

Does anybody else stockpile pet food? I only buy Purina cat chow but I usually only see $.99 coupons and never any acceptable sales. Anywho there was a deal at Target awhile ago if I bought 2 big bags (which I used coupons on both) then I would get a $5 gift card. That deal saved me like $5 a bag.
I was just curious how others do this. Or if they do it...

I am like you, I only buy Purina brand, but my for dogs. I will stockpile if I can get my hands on some of those $2 Purina Dog Chow q's. I have some $1 q's that I am using now as needed until they expire at the end of the year. If I can get the $2 q's, I will buy many bags and the largest plastic tote that I can find so that I can store the bags outside on my deck. It is winter and will keep well.

Is it just me or have you notice that Purina brand just does not go on sale?

EDIT: Purina Dog Chow is finally one sale!!! http://www.afullcup.com/forums/my-kr...iipppeeee.html

It does not go on sale very often, and if it does, the sale isn't very good. I feel your pain.

Yeah I see "sales" all the time at different stores. I found Walmarts everyday price is the cheapest and thats about as low as everyone's sales tend to match. So yeah no real sales and only like $1 Q's that I've seen so far.

Last fall there was a $5 Avoderm coupon and PetsMart had bags on clearance for 4.99. I got everyone I could think of the print the coupons for me and was able to stockpile 8 months of premium food, it was fantastic. We are very picky about what they can eat--really only 5 things regularly (3 types of dry kibble, Greenies and Milkbones) so it is really rare to score a deal like that!

The only thing about stockpiling pet food is that it can get stale after a month. I buy only dog foods using vit c or ascobic acid as preservatives. Lucily with five BIG dogs we go thru 60 lbs a week

For canned goods it is easier but i wd just make my own chicken and rice recipe and frreze it for pennies and i can coupon and stockpile chicken and rice.

With five SMALL dogs we go through a 40 pound bag in about six months. They each get about a TB of kibble, twice a day.

We have only one cat and we buy the Friskies 16lb bag one at a time. I don't stockpile because even if you store the food in plastic containers, you can still get some weird bugs or even worse...maggots *shudders* if the bags are opened at all.

I suggest that if you do stockpile it, do not open the bags at all and store them in plastic tubs. For the opened bag, pour the contents into a smaller plastic container, such as Snapware (we use these currently and work very very well!) with a cup in there. Wash the container every time is gets empty along with the cup. HTH and let me know if you start doing it!

Great idea. I had have mice get into dry pet food that isn't in tubs (dog food) or in a plastic bucket (cat food). I don't know about the food going stale. It's not bagged in air tight bags. In light of that I'm more concerned about mice than staleness.

We use a tupperware cereal container for our "open" food. Haven't had any issues with the unopened food. We have had up to 40 of the smaller bags of food without a problem. We only have 2 Chihuahuas, but we shop for MIL's dog too. He eats more than our babies.

Most dog food I have seen have expiration dates. I just keep them rotated just like I do our own food.

I do for our cats, but for our Dogs I only feed Diamond and Nutro since we breed working dogs & service dogs. Our dog food has coupons from time to time and I do try and get as many as I can when they do.

I love to stockpile treats for puppy training though

I don't stockpile dog or cat food but if I find a good deal on birdseed i store it in my freezer. Keeps those little flys away. You can also freeze dog or cat treats.

I wouldn't say stockpile but we tend to get 3-4 months worth at a time we just store the Unopened bags in totes on backporch and the open bag we dump in a dog food container

We don't have more than a bag or two on hand but the vet told us you can put it in ziplock giant bags and put in the deep freeze. Our friends picked up a chest freezer for pennies "free" on Craigslist and works and we put it in their garage. Didn't raise the electric anymore than a dollar a month. Using the freezer ensures no mice ever get in. With our mild temps in Wyoming we know others that use Los fridge in garage to store dog food. I would never just leave on the porch etc or the squirrels would get it around here they even get into totes the plastic kind, chew right through them in the winter or summer. Our dog is a small poodle and it takes forever for her to get through a 20 pound bag. She only eats Iams and greenies, I think the Greenies are like "crack" for dogs, she loves them!

Animals I do and just ran mine out to restock.

I do. I ran mine out. Totally out. Even their canned people food. Even their organ meats. All but one 1/2 bag of treats. They ate chicken on the bone, mashed potatoes, corn(My one cat will kill ppl for corn) and some kitty milk last night to get rid of all that too. I have 5 full time indoor/outdoor cats. I also feed up to five more wanderers and sometimes two ferrets and two more indoor cats. My little commune includes five people. However, the courtyard is a dumping ground for strays. I am part of the TNR program (trap neuter and release) but am not official so I do not often get food or money most of what I do is OOP. I cannot be official and even though I keep shot records on 18 cats some of which I have not seen in months, I am not on the books. So I do stockpile but every now and again I run it out to see how long it takes. If there is ever a time when we are broke or we lose power or whatever may come I need to know how long I can support my core group. My cats are 1/2 raw. Summer time most of my five will not eat cat food only raw and what they kill. Most of what I stockpile is for the wanderers which usually have a lifespan of five years. Well on my watch you can double that even with the crap food I feed them. When I get donations I use it and all q's I use as well and thus the beginning of the restockpile.

This is what I got today with IP's at Walmart and from the friends and family sale&clearance&free ship online at Wags. Expect this to double or even triple then add the tuna and salmon I use when we find wounded cats and of course the frozen livers I get etc.

Storage is buckets. If you learn one thing about me is that I am addicted to buckets. Yah some people call 'em tubs, rubbermaid, etc. It's all a dang bucket to me lid or not, basket shaped or not it's a dang bucket!

Speaking of stockpiling my one neighbor is gathering more q's for me. I showed her what I got and she part times shibby, one of my mostly indoor(in the winter) cats. She came down to feed Shibby and Luna(she has epilepsy) special food because of Shibby's weight problem and Luna's epilepsy. Luna was born with it. Zwack was born with another form of Epilepsy as well. Zwack and Shibby were found half dead in storm drains. Luna was sort of catnapped by my hubby, it was supposed to be a month long cat sitting...four years ago. No meds, no need for their conditions. Special foods yes. Shibby is the only over weight cat we have and the vet doesn't know why, maybe her thyroid. However, she is SOLID not saggy and hunts, plays and fights with the best of them so the vet isn't worried. Anyhow, my neighbor is gathering her q's to help me double this stockpile with some of the special foods for my core group.

I think all the strays have our place on the radar and hone in here! I go through a 16 pound bag of Friskies dry cat food a week and at least 5 cans of wet food a day (plus feeding two dogs who came here as strays and now have taken over the couch). What I have gotten cheap this week is at Petsmart with the $5 holiday bucks promotion where if you buy certain sizes of Purina products you get a $5 off your next Purina purchase (this promotion ends on Dec 31, 2012). The bag was $12.99 and I used a previously gotten $5 holiday bucks coupon on it making it $7.99. Then I still got another $5 coupon to use through 1/31/13. I also got the dogs several Pur Luv busy type bones for free as someone had played coupon fairy at another store. Then I went over to Target where this week they have if you buy 2 certain sized pet products you get a $5 gift card. I also used a $5 off 2 Purina items Target coupon that was in a recent insert to save even more (can't remember which date it was). The Friskies 16 lb bag was $10.89 and a 32 count box of wet food was $14.05. So, it all wound up being a great deal almost like getting the dry food nearly free and I am stocked for a couple of weeks along with what I had at home. I keep the dry food in a metal trash can with a good lid in my pantry to keep out ants and other creepy crawlies. We always think of our animals first! God bless everyone who takes cares of all the little creatures that the Lord sends their way! Oh, yeah, we feed the birds, too!

Wow, sounds like you guys are getting a good amount of food for your oop money. I'm not that fortunate, but then again maybe I am. I have 3 hunting dogs, 2 cats, a mouse and a whole bunch of aimless animals that venture to my porch. I always wondered why my cat food supply would be completely gone within hours of putting it on the porch during the day, but wouldn't budge an inch if I kept the bowl inside.

I usually pay full price, but to be honest they eat fresh cooked people food more often than not. At least I know about the hormones in the chicken I feed them.

I've seen on a couple different forums about the free bags of trial Beneful everyone was getting or all the great deals Petco/Petsmart has going on. I can't seem to catch a break with the stores or the deals.

CVS has some good deals if you have a % off Q or whatever and I usually throw in some cheap cans of wet cat food if my order is less than the ECB I use. During one of my most recent trips, I was able to score 13lb Pedigree dog food and 3lb Purina Cat Chow for pennies (if not free) with the overage from coupons and a % off.

Shoprite in my neck of the woods seems to have friskies cat cans for .45 cents the cheapest i ever paid without q's is .40 so that's not too bad. I am google eyed from planning all night my scenarios but I think the sale started already.

Found some Avoderm last night for 75% off. It was a great deal but reminded me of the awesome $5 coupon that ended up giving me almost a year of free Avoderm. Miss that deal so much!
