I have several opened boxes of various products (tampons, every size and shape pad available, plus incontinence pads) that have been sitting around for six years bc I was on depo and DD was young. DD is almost 13 so a couple weeks ago I rounded them all up to put in a big bin along with the freebies I've been getting lately. They were all still in perfect condition, they were under the bathroom sink, in drawers in the bathroom, and in my nightstand. Since its a non-food item unless they get damp they should last a very long time. |

In terms of danger tampons to cause toxic shock which can be fatal, but the odds of getting it are slim. I was reading about it recently because someone in our circle passed away from toxic shock, and basically there was a PG tampon called Rely that was so super absorbant that it was recalled because of the high occurance of toxic shock. From everything I've read it is better to not use super heavy duty tampons and to change them very frequently and not leave them in overnight so you don't get toxic shock. In terms of stockpiling just be very careful to keep them in a dry and cool place, somewhere that they can't get wet or moldy or mildewy or soiled. I always buy them on sale and keep a stockpile of them in my dry closet away from all moisture. Here is another article I recently read about tampons so always read about recalls! okay i was reading a post about someone saying that they found a bug in their kotex after having it for 6 months and thought it was because the bugs were attracted to cotton or something. so next time, if there is a good deal on tampons, i should stockpile a lot? |

Tampons are free/cheap so often. I only have like 10 boxes. Tops. Then again, I'm the only one in the family that needs them. I think since they are in their individual wrappers you should be ok. Its up to you and your needs/beliefs/space to see how many you'd like to keep.

I have noticed an expiration date printed on the wrapper of the Refresh brand tampons. I thought that was strange?

They individually wrapped and in a box so I'm not sure how bugs get in.

Because they are free so often, I only stockpile like 3 boxes at a time and maintaine three as I rotate out. I guess it's more for space, not necessarily safety. Where would I keep 20 boxes?!? I need food more than that!

I'm sure some of these things sit around in warehouses/store shelves for a good long while sometimes. They don't have expiration dates that I know of, so who knows how old the ones you buy at the store are? Having them sit around your house wouldn't be any different. I have a 2+ year supply of tampons and don't have any problems using them as long as they don't get wet.

Where is everyone finding these free tampons? I've been couponing for a year and haven't ever found a box cheaper than 1.99. (I know this doesn't pertain to the current topic, sorry.)

We don't have a Wags, but I'll check out the rite aid deal, thanks! I just hadn't seen anything good for tampons lately. Have tons of free panty liners, though.

They should be fine as long as they are kept dry and out of humid areas in your home. If you live in the south I wouldn't put stockpiles of paper products in a humid garage.

Tampons fatal? Wow, never thought I'd read those two words in the same sentence.

If you're worried about bugs getting in because of the cotton, try keeping them in an airtight rubbermaid container.
