I've recently decided to switch from comparing price per roll to price per square foot of toilet paper. Alas I've had quite a bit of difficulty finding out how many square feet are in different brands of toilet papers/different varieties/different sizes I'm going to try and get as much info on this as I can online and at the store but I would love it if anyone could give me more info to compile my list. I'm also trying to determine the stock up price of paper towels per sq. ft. and have thus put together a list of paper towels here: Paper Towel Information

Okay so following the general rule for price comparison for toilet paper when going by square foot, you should ideally aim to pay $0.01 per square foot. In other words your price per package should essentially match the number of square feet per package.

Example:

Charmin Basic double roll 12 pack is 375.7 sq. ft. thus a great price for it would be around $3.75 or less.

Of course this is often more a hopeful stock up price then a strict everyday price. Sometimes it's difficult to find a brand you like at this price. Personally I try to get as close to 1 cent per sq. ft. as possible while still getting brands I particularly like which sometimes requires me pay a $1 more then this stock up price would dictate for what I deem good quality. It's all really relative to personal tastes, sale cycles, and your area's general pricing.

Glad it's helpful, I was trying to figure out if the Cottonelle gift card deal at CVS was worth it before I go to the store and the next thing I know I'm making this list. I tell you I never knew there were so many different kinds/sizes of toilet paper before now. I'm still working on the list, it's all based off what I have at home and the information available on various online pictures of the various packages.

Thanks! I'm glad you guys like it, my family thinks it's a downright silly thing to spend my time on but I think it's kind of interesting and useful. The Charmin has me a bit confused because I'm pretty sure the Big Rolls and the Double rolls are the same thing, 12 rolls of each are supposed to be essentially 24 regular rolls yet they have difference square footage. I actually think Big Rolls are discontinued and Double rolls are the replacement though. *Sigh* I have weird hobbies....

That's the reason I never by Scott's 1000 count toilet paper, you can get it for a good price when you go by the sq. ft. rule but it just doesn't seem as good, too thin too do the job. I'm a bit of a toilet paper picky, by the ply type person myself. Price is important, but efficiency is needed.

Just because it says double rolls does not mean it's a better deal.

Thanks! I saw that Soft and Absorbent Brand at Walmart too but I could not for the life of me remember the name of it, I jotted down some info for some toilet paper while I was at the store but somehow in all my toilet paper note taking I totally forgot to write down the name.

I find double rolls to be so misleading, oh sure double is all fine and good but not if the brand's regular rolls are tiny to begin with. If there's anything I've learned from making this list it's that not all rolls are created equal.

I use the soft & absorbent in both of my bath rooms.It's not the softest but, it gets the job done for the price.

This is very useful indeed, but I do know that some toilet papers have thicker sheets than others, therefore you need less. If you ever have the chance can you rate them by the thickness of their sheets? I think that should also come to mind because my mom buys some toilet paper for cheap and it does have a lot of sq. ft per roll but the sheets are pretty thin, so one would end up using alot more sheets than if i were to use say Cottonelle toilet paper. very true point---> "NOT ALL ROLLS/ TOILET PAPER IS CREATED EQUAL."

so far the ones I have tried are:
-cottonelle clean care GREAT
-cottonelle ultra soft GREAT
-scott extra soft GREAT
-angel soft BAD
-the cheap one my mom buys (don't know what brand it is) BAD

i've never dared to get scott 1000 , you can tell already that its not good quality.

That is a good point, toilet paper thickness is important. I put the amount of plies per roll which I think helps in illustrating the thickness but I think of course more ply's doesn't always mean stronger or thicker. But I think toilet paper thickness is rather difficult to determine. I wouldn't know quite how to "measure" it. If there was some sort of general consensus, like a poll or something then maybe we could add a rating.

You know technically it'd take about 4 Cottonelle clean care double rolls to equal just 1 Scott 1000 count roll in square feet and both are 1 ply (though Cottonelle seems thicker). So I suppose technically you could use up to 4 times the Scott 1000 count and it'd still be equal to a Cottonelle double roll. So unless you have to use more than 4 times the Scott 1000 count it's not such a rip off. Still not something I'd prefer but if there was a good sale I might still buy it.

I'm so glad you did this! I've always wanted to figure that out, but I just never have time and can't take the time while shopping with a 4 yr old. This looks so easy to remember and very quick to figure out while we are standing in the store. Highlight of my week, (yes it's been a bad week)..
