| Just because we have more of something does that mean kids have to have more of it!
When I find a good deal I stock up on it. The problem is that instead of using it in the same moderate manner we usually do, the kids think, "Oh goodie, there is so much of this I can eat more of it!" This defeats the purpose of my stockpiling. Instead I am just using more of an item and having to buy it again. I've taken to hiding things around the house so they won't devour it right away!

HAHA I call it a 'feeding frenzy' every time I get home from shopping. Sure they help unload the car, and drop everything in the middle of the kitchen floor, then they search the bags for all the goodies. You are not alone, and yes hiding it is a must, if you want anything left after a week. I had my stockpile all nice and neat in the basement, but got tired of finding empty boxes of food sitting on the shelf and wrappers stuffed in the pockets of the pool table. That I am in the process of moving everything up to my room in a closet. It's not going to be all nice and neat, and is going to be hard going from 9 shelves to only three. But, I'm tired of searching for the deals only to have my kids and at times my DH think they can help themselves to what ever they want. Good Luck, Lynda |

I also keep my food in the basement, and sure enough, there also are the empty containers and wrappers! Someday we will look back at these times with fond memories. |

I have 2 stockpile closets, which help A LOT!!!! We made an empty space into a pantry in the kitchen. Anything that I put in there is FREE GAME. What I put in my hall closet (Hubby put shelves in it) is OFF LIMITS!

I put things in a high cabinet (over the kitchen sink and top of the pantry closet) and they are not allowed to rummage for whatever tickles their fancy. I have a snack basket on the counter with stuff for lunches and snacks. We have 4 kids between us and we laid down the law when we got married 7 yrs ago - we told them we are on a budget and you can't just eat anything you want, whenever you want. Over the years they know I buy great snax, I portion them out and everyone seems to be happy with that. Don't get me wrong, we have had incidents where someone gets ticked off because something was eaten that was being saved or whatever. The bottom drawer of the fridge is an off limits area too - it never fails that if i need something for a meal, I have to hide it in there or it may not make it! It may sound awful to some people but it works for us and no one ever goes hungry or without.

Wow. I honestly have never hidden food in my life, and find this fascinating!! I grew up kind of poor in the inner city, but the one thing my parents always made sure we had was food, including treats. I was welcome to eat whatever we had in the house whenever I wanted. My husband and I live a bit better, but I just never learned to tell my kids "No" to any food, especially when they see that we have 10 of them. I feel blessed to be able to afford what I can, and unless it's "unhealthy" (which means I probably don't buy it anyway), they're welcome to eat what they want, all they want, when they want. I feel like just like adults, they're sometimes hungrier than others, sometimes craving a certain food (I trust that the human body craves for mostly the "right" reasons--vitamin deficiency, etc), I have average-sized kids with pretty normal appetites. But it's eye-opening to see the different ways other moms handle it, and I appreciate all your stories!

My kids and DH is the same way. My dh decided that since we have so many cookies, its ok to eat a half a pack a day. This from a man who is diabetic Then the other day, my DD was doing laundry and decided that since we have sooo much snuggle, that she would use the liquid in the washer AND a dryer sheet in the dryer. I asked her if she ever seen me use both, and her reply was "no, i was just trying to make it special for you"![]() You are not alone. |

My kids and hubby think the same way. My dad is diabetic too and he would come over and eat a whole bag of the chips ahoy. My sister lives next to me and thinks that since I get so much stuff for us that she should be allowed to have what she wants. I don't mind helping if my family needs food or whatever I give them what I can. I have learned I have to hide some things.

When my brother and I were younger, we were TOTALLY guilty of the "help mom carry it in then see what she got!" mentality -- it was SO tempting. However, my mother has never stockpiled. Uses a ton of coupons, but never had time to devour ads and stockpile that way. I, of course, use a ton of coupons AND stockpile, which is never good considering I live in a tiny apartment with a roommate ;-) -- She wonders why I need so many stinkin' razors and extra body washes!!!

Yep. That's the difference. I've become a bit of a health nut. No chips ahoy here (and I MISS THEM DEARLY). My oldest won't eat chocolate at all (imagine!!). And he prefers Activia to Gogurt! But, we did get a tickle the other day when he asked my mom what that delicious coating was on the chicken, and she told him, "Skin." When she made spaghetti, he said, "Grandma, you forgot the zucchini and the mushrooms." So, I think I need a bad basket and some stuff to go in it. Then, they'll be something worth hiding! LOL
