| What do you stockpile??
OK...my hubby is after me to get after my food stockpile and get it at the point where we have at least a year's worth of food on hand (non perishable stuff only). He's afraid the new man in charge in DC will collapse the american dollar. So, here's my question, what would all be good to stockpile, that doesn't need to be frozen or refridgerated? I'm talking dry and canned goods that will keep at least a year. I already have diapers, wipes, t.p., feminine products, toothpaste, hair products, ziploc bags, and deoderant covered. Here's what is on my list so far. Spaghetti Sauce Tomato Sauce Canola Oil Soups Canned Veggies Canned Tomato products Applesauce Jelly Juice Dry Onion Soup mix Taco/Chili seasoning Cake Mixes Macaroni/Noodles Crackers Flour Sugar Salt Pepper Garbage bags dried vegetables jerky canned stews canned tuna and chicken powdered milk multi-vitamins dry yeast shortening canned fruits chocolate peanut butter powdered cheese pastas cereal granola bars peanut butter mustard candies spaghetti sauces canned fruits canned veggies Rice Bag dry beans Peanuts

DakotaMom I know how you feel and my DH feels the same way he wants me to stockpile more food too. I have everything else done with. We are living in unpredictable times and it is good to have extra food around if needed. This is a good thread to start because I have a hard time thinking about what to stock for food too.

Thanks everyone...the list is certainly shaping up. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one worried about the upcoming months and what is going to happen. We typically have at least a months worth of food on hand at all times, so upgrading to a year's worth is going to be a challenge. I'm going to try to buy with coupons as much as possible to save money, but I'm sure this endeavor will cost several hundreds of dollars. If anyone has printable coupons they'd like to share for any of these items, feel free to post and I'll put them next to the item in the shopping list! Thanks again everyone!

We have already started and a great website to help you get started is the latter day saints website I think it The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (I am not a LDS member) also not sure if you live urban or suburban BUT dont forget seeds for the garden ! I started early last year but financially had to stop in November and ate through some of the stockpile. Restarted again last week I try to spend 30.00 every 2 weeks in stockpile supplies (which goes really far with coupons) Also dont forget cleaning supplies, Bandaids , peroxides , alcohol , lamp oil (hopefully you already have lamps) matches. I like to have at least 100+lbs of flour at all times and 50+ sugar Dont forget Canning supplies also~!

Okay, now I'm paranoid (and feeling a little inadequate) after reading these posts! 100 lbs of flour?? I felt so proud after getting my .19 cottonelle 4 pks (I only had coupons for 2 packs!) and .18 cereal, but definitely am overwhelmed when I think about trying to stockpile enough stuff to last several months--seems like just when I get the pantry/freezers stocked, a couple weeks go by and we go through it so fast. I am unemployed right now so I do have more time to devote to couponing, but it takes a lot of focus and patience. I guess it's a hobby--and an art--for the serious stockpilers, no different than, say, scrapbooking (but much cheaper, LOL!). I'm encouraged by reading your posts, and looking forward to learning from all you seasoned couponers out there!

I too am a bit overwhelmed with thoughts of stockpiling enough for an entire year! Where in the world does a person keep 100 pounds of flour? A big trashcan with the snapdown lid? I have started my stockpile in the past month and I'm just making baby steps so far. Altho the freezer if packed and my pantry is full and the overflow is in my Daddy's old pie safe in the living room. I wish the food items were as easy to acquire as the toothpaste! LOL! I feel blessed just to make it from one paycheck to another and do my level best at studying the scenarios that yall post with the coupons and the grocery sales for the week and have even begun to plan my menus every Monday. This year thing will surely take some figuring.... I do thank each and everyone for your wealth of information and helpfulness to us newbies, you just don't realize how much you help us with your posts and how much you have taught us! |

Just about anything that I have a Q/combo deal for that will make it almost free, etc. If I have a really good deal on dryer sheets, I will get those and keep the boxes in a rubbermaid air tight container to keep them "fresh", otherwise, I am stockpiling liquid fabric softner because I have begun using my clothes line in recent months to cut down on electricity and dryer sheets won't help me there ! ![]() I have so far the following: Canned veggies canned soups/pasta (like ravioli) spaghetti sauces peanut butter chicken/beef broths corn meal, sugar, and flour (these will keep in the freezer, I use my plastic/vacuum sealer on them first) canned fruit canned tuna/salmon deoderant/shampoo/bandaids/toothpaste (all the toiletries) dish washing liquid and machine tablets Air freshners (I still have a ton of these from the Qs that made them free and I USE them in every room)! canned juices pantry meals such as Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers, or Hormel Complete Meals, etc FOREVER STAMPS! (ok, no Q deal there, but still a wise item since the rates are going up in May!) Powdered milk (we have never been able to "aquire" a taste for it, but use it for cooking when called for) canned milk (evaporated) oh yeah, and also: dried beans, rice & pasta too

My question on this is how do you guys store your stockpiles of dry beans, rice, mixes, cereal etc. I'd hate to get it built up only to find a mouse has gotten into it (that would be my luck). My stock pile area is in the basement so right now I have a metal trash can (yes it's new ) that I have some stuff in.

We have also begun to stockpile food items. One of the things we did was to ensure that all dry goods are in plastic so that critters don't get to them. I realize this isn't an issue for everyone, but we live in a rural community. Also, if possible keep flour, cake mixes, pastas, etc. in a fridge as they will develop bugs. Refrigeration will not hurt these items, but it will curtail the mealy bugs or flour beatles, or whatever they are called. Also, don't forget that you may want to ensure you have a supply of water. I save all of my tins from things like Christmas cookies, etc and store them in that. I LOVE the tins that popcorn comes in at Holidays, we first stated using one of those when the mice were getting into the dog's cookies (treats..but hey, he THINKS their COOKIES!! ) hahaha

okay one thing I have to say politically........the new man I would be really concerned about if I was people but people will see in due time. now back to the stockpile Yay for you! I would stockpile (and know others who are stockpiling extra since he got elected including talking about getting generators for their houses). I have a stockpile probably about a years worth of health and beauty stuff its the easiest and doesnt expire as soon. rice/beans can be stored in plastic containers (air tight). Dont forget juices, salad dressings, cake mixes (can be frozen but would put in an air tight tote).

Yes I've been utilizing the popcorn/cookie tins also. Other than putting pasta etc in the fridge it does seem that I'm on the right track. Although I do think things will get worse before they get better (and I want to be prepared) my main reason for working on my stockpile is that my RA is really making it hard at work and I want to be prepared if there should come a day I can't work. |

Glass jars! Yep, start saving them when you finish off the pickles, mayo, what ever you purchase in them! They will work better than the tins probably!

| My stockpile...
is a bit out of control and disorderly but... I have a storage room in my basement with grains sugar beans popcorn pasta canned fruits and veggies canned meats soups tomatoe sauce canned tomatoes honey more cereal boxes than common sense twice as many fruit rollups as cereal poptarts granola bars personal hygiene products for the whole family cleaning products for the whole household baking mixes I have it all because I am "supposed to" and we feel it very necessary for hard times. I am grateful that I am learning to purchase it all more economically. Basically I am getting 60% more for my grocery dollars than before. |

My stockpiling is not political. We are in a position to better afford items this time of year and I am hoping that it will last. Over the past 3 months this site has helped me so much learn how to shop wisely. These are great lessons for those with or without money and those with or without a political agenda. It is time for us all to become better stewards of what we have. Thanks.

I live in the south so my reasons aren't political. But its a thought. I live on the Mississippi coast. so we stock every year for a few months for hurricane season. You wouldnt believe how hard it was after the days following Katrina just to get a toothbrush. I dont know if anyone listed but canned meats such as potty meat, spam, and vienna sausage.
