I think she might have meant potted meat...the kind that comes in little round cans and looks like a sandwich spread. |

Thanks for all the hints on stock piling. I have been wondering what others think of the recession. We have planned out a garden this year and the old canning supplies will come out of the basement. My DH looks at me like I'm crazy sometimes stocking up on H&B items and canned goods, but I fill that harder times are a coming for the US. |

I find it's very refreshing to have year's worth of most things on hand and to not have to worry about getting to town to buy anything other than milk and bread. It REALLY cuts down on the budget too. I spent about $400 in groceries at one time, but i will keep us in the basics for most of the year. I bought when things were on sale and used coupons. $.44 for canned veggies (regular size cans), and $.50 for spaghetti sauce, and $.27 for Cream of chicken and tomato soup.

I wish I could do the stockpiling of food and all. But we eat out like ummm.... 5 or 6 nights a week, I'm not much of a cooker. I can cook and grew up with a once a month only grocery trip. So I know I could do it and it's healthier to cook at home, but we just don't. How o how can I get back to cooking all the food I already have from the sales?? |

without to comment on the politics, i think a years supply is a great idea! deals to meals is great, and there are some great blogs out there. google food storage years supply. there are lots of people who are trying to do the same thing, and have some great tools for calculating. im not at home right now to add my favorite links, but i know you can also do food storage on youtube, and find some links that way. i do think the beans, rice and spaghetti are great deals from the latter day saits website. i think its called provident living, and it came up with the food storage order form as my google search. remember that for longer term storage its better when stored in a can, or mylar bag. for powdered milk i think its called morning moos......the mormons... aka latter day saints have this down to a science, as they have done food storage for many decades, so looking at some of those blogs would help tremedesly, since even if we have stockpiled, we still would need milk, bread, etc......oh, and dont forget about water. could be important...... . i am also just starting out, and wasnt sure on what to do first. hope this helps... |

when I was really too busy to cook everyday [for whatever reason], I did more cooking on the weekend, cook bigger dishes [last 2 days] or I would cook a meat/main dish at night [like 9pm]. Then for dinner, it was more like making some sides and reheating the main course....quick. Quote:

How do I find a list of "target" prices. Like what would be a really good deal on food items? ex. Canned Veggies $.35 Cereal $1.25 I would really appreicate anyone's help on a list. I'm not a cooker, but i want to be. I definitely want to start a food stockpile. I have all the H&B products I can possibly get. Thank you! |

powdered eggs crisco - yes the old fashioned in the can stuff - longer shelf life than most oils - can be used in place of butter for baking if necessary pickles baking powder and soda Saltine crackers in a sealed tin - army surplus carries them salt and pepper and dehydrated spices; onions and garlic Don't forget batteries, matches, ziploc bags, foil and a propane stove/tank. Looks like we'll may all be coming to your house so can we send our sleeping bags now? |

Canned fruit, tomato sauce, canned veggies, TP, paper towels, health/beauty items, bottled water, coffee, creamer, sweetener, sugar, condiments, cleaning items, laundry detergent, fabric softener sheets, cat food and treats, cat litter, pasta, rice, beans, cereal, OTC meds, prescriptions, and pretty much anything else we use. I've also started buying food in #10 cans for long term storage - powdered milk, powdered butter, bananas, peanut butter powder, hot cocoa mix, sausage TVP, pancake mix, cornmeal, cream of wheat, etc. There's no such thing as being TOO prepared. Better safe than sorry. |

| Stockpiling food
Thanks for that tip and reminder! I have stockpiled before just to get ahead on staples for a few months and it seems to reduce my spending...though I'm not sure it does. ![]() I definitely stockpile beans (all varietys), rice, pasta and tuna. I also like to stockpile canned tomatoes. Recently, I've been purchasing the giant restaurant-sized cans of crushed and diced tomatoes to make marinara and tomato soup in bulk and then freeze it. Those giant cans are way cheaper. Blessings! Mel |

Other websites you might want to check out include: Emergency Essentials and Shelf Reliance. Or, google long term food storage. |

I find it overwhelming to plan the food stockpile in terms of storage and how long items will last. Does anyone have one good website that helps you start from scratch? Like cereal, we probably have twenty boxes. That will last a while. Do I really open them all and put them in plastic containers or are they ok in the boxes even though there is glue on them? Sometimes I keep pasta in the boxes for 2 years. Now I'm learning about storage and think I could've ended up with an infestation.

again, I have to throw my two cents worth in with out enough time to read the whole thread so sorry if its a repeat. Why don't we all call it urban homesteading? Even with politics out of the way there are enough global warming threats and natural disaster threats to give plenty of reasons to stockpile. If you start now, you might only have to spend your money paying for heat this winter, I live in an area where they keep raising the gas costs so people keep freezing to death. oops, sorry started my own rant.

I stock up on famine products and foods that last for more than a year or so...like I just stocked up on tuna and some cleanser that is good until 2011. I like to stock up on items we use every day like deo, toothpaste and others. Foods like oil, rice, beans, pasta and pasta sauce are good choices and you have them on your list so way to go!! If I stock up on meat I do so that it could last us the whole month, but not more than that, b/c of hurricane season in FL. Knock on wood we have never lost power for more than half hr.
