| I love to shop! I have one closet in my home (granted, a BIG one) that is dedicated to my stockpile (other than food) when it gets full I remember that I have 5 younger sisters, three with kids and one in college, all of who have less money than my husband and I, I have friends serving in Iraq and Afghanastan and I know PLENTY of worthwile charities that I, otherwise would not be able to support. So my stockpile stays under control. |

I also struggle with the urge to get free stuff (so I never have to pay for shampoo, toothpaste, etc.) vs. "where do I put it all?"! Another balancing act is figuring out how much time to devote to: clipping coupons, organizing them, visiting the stores, re-planning shopping trips when stores are out of stock of items, etc. It can get really out-of-hand, consuming hours when I could be doing other important things. I am single, work full-time and am also active with my church. How do the rest of you figure out how much time with coupons and shopping is enough? Thanks, Zoya in Maryland |

| I just recently started and I must admit I've been bitten by the bug but I'll also admit that I have no choice but to keep it in check. My wife, daughter, myself, and one on the way live in a 2-BR apartment. I don't have room for a year's stockpile barely a month's worth on some items. I keep in mind expiration dates (I'll hunt for the best exp. dates on packages) as well as practicality. Despite something being free if we won't use it I won't buy it unless I KNOW someone else who will. (If I come out making money then obviously I make it exceptions but DUH) |

| well I know I'm the odd man/woman out here.. I only have three months outta the year to do my deals and get what I need/want and get what my family needs/wants. So yeah its crazy at my parents house right now LOL I also bought/got free tons of stuff that I am going to try to yardsale to make some money (so far my total for three sales is about 600)! So while I love it, its a thrill, necessity since its so dang expensive to get here, and helps everyone out I couldn't stockpile like this year around unless I had my own house here. |

| I stockpile as I can we are a family of 4 I try to not buy more than a years supply of any given thing at a time that being said I live in a small town Only walmart , and DG we finally got a walgreens last week, we are a 45 minute drive to a decent size town and my DH and I both drive older cars that we do not like to drive 45 minuted away for fear the not make it back! So when I do get to Aldis I buy alot When we go to town we spend the whole day and hit every store we can (went today in fact)I will not be going back until November Saves on gas and money (keeps me out of stores). Also with uncertian times currently happening and future I like to be prepared. I also donate to the family outreach program thru school when ever I get to much or near expiration. They just got 30 tubes of toothpaste, I kept 10 paid 10 cents each. |

The point for some it to save more than just their immediate family. If they have friends and family that they want to help out ,that are in need they can easily share their stockpile items. I don't think it that time consuming to few extra in the store when you are already shopping for yourself. Also when the other poster mentioned having only five or six of something,to someone that doesn't stockpile they could consider that hoarding as well. Some people only have one of each. |

| I am a great organizer. I just reorganized my ENTIRE garage to fit all my stockpile (PM for link to pics.) To stay OT, I think that ENOUGH is NEVER ENOUGH. I always have family and friends over who rummage through for stuff they need! Last edited by txsavingdiva; 08-29-2008 at 03:35 PM. Reason: removed pics |

| OMG! That is soo cool! I am new to the "couponing" thing too, and my DH wanted to know when enough was enough. I guess I am adding my voice to the chorus, but I really try to give some to food banks, shelters, etc. I know of several families on here that are barely making ends meet WITH the coupons. There was a point two years ago where I had to go to a food bank to get food because of family situations. It was so hard for me, especially considering I used to volunteer there!!! Now, I save enough for 3 months. No more, no less. If something is free, or I make money, then I get it - and immediately drive it to the shelter. I am trying to teach my daughter compassion and the idea that everyone should help someone else. Just my 2 cents. |

| When do I say enough is enough?? When there are no more family members and friends of friends of friends that need help, food kitchens/banks, rescue missions, womens shelters, inner city programs, homeless shelters, people under bridges........then I will say enough is enough! Do I seriously give to all these places??yes, I do! I will clean out my pantry in a heartbeat if I know there is a family in need! Iwould also rather give away my last bottle of Pantene is I knew someone needed/wanted it. My stockpile and pantry isn't for my family first......it's for others. I'd just as soon give it all away and start over. By giving it away, I don't ever have to worry about *the addiction* to stockpile. Nothing I buy is ever so sacred that I can't give it away.....if it is, then I have to do a brain revamp because I have put my priorities in the wrong place! Yes, I do have auctions and garage sales, but giving is the most important aspect of it for me! Just my take on stockpiling 101! |

Either way I'd be more than willing to correspond with you via email and help you address things one at a time. Even without being physically there we could determine what constitutes the clutter, your pet peeves, what items you're always losing, how clutter is wasting the time you could be spending doing better things, etc. Be forewarned, I'm absolutely in love with the following things: Vacuum storage bags: for out of season clothing, for stuffed animals your kids have too many of but you're not getting rid of, perhaps for another baby, clothes that you've outgrown, out of season linens, extra pillows/linens, pretty much anything I can put in there. Under the bed, slid into the closet, out in storage, etc. Oh, fabric you plan to use, yarn, quilting supplies, man I love those bags. You could hand me 100 and I'd use them all by the end of a weekend. Big plastic totes: for absolutely anything. Wicker and/or rattan baskets and hampers Utilizing odd space. My utility cart had a huge open shelf on the bottom, I measured it and carried around the measurements in my wallet until I found big rectangular baskets with handles on clearance at Walmart, 3 of them fit under their perfectly and hold a variety of things. Small or unusual chests of drawers, for things like batteries or hand tools. I insist the kids keep their electronic toys in one drawer in their room, so they, in theory, always know where the accessories are. Same thing with cell phone chargers, etc, I have a tub of cords/cables, at one point they each were in their own ziploc bag with what they were written in sharpie. Ziploc bags, tupperware containers, furniture with built-in storage, etc. Now I wanna reorganize "virtually"! |

| I have a certain area that is dedicated to my stockpile, when it actually becomes "a pile" then I sort through it and donate, donate, donate! Since the last time it got out of hand I now do this: I have a large box in my garage for each group I donate to on a regular basis: Animal Shelter, Children's Shelter, DD's School, Free Medical/Dental Clinic, Women's Shelter and Family, Friends and Donation Baskets (I do a bunch of LARGE baskets for silent auction items for several non-profits. Now I don't even bring it in the house if I know ahead of time that I bought it specifically to donate...in the box it goes! And once a month I make the rounds and drop everything off. I also go through the house about every other month and gather up stuff that I have accumulated that needs to go, shampoo I don't like, bought too much aspirin, gifts that need to be re-gifted! I think that a 6 month to one year stockpile on things that your family needs though is great if you have the space. When I do go through my stuff I try to remember, if I use 1 tube of toothpaste a month (for example) not to keep more than 12 of my favorite under the cabinet. BUT, I have 20 boxes of kleenex from LAST fall that I purchased when the clearanced the special back to school 4 packs and I got 4 boxes for .74. AND I gave away probaby 20 boxes and used 20 since then. I have 10 packs of 10 count Bounty papertowels from this year's clearance, happened to be there the day they marked them down to 3.46 and I had $1 off Q. |

| Sort of along the same lines here....I see people buying all different brands of H&B, cleaning, etc. For a lot of things I have my favorite and even if something else is free or super cheap, I really don't want it. Shampoo, make-up, razors all fall into this category for example. I know I used to buy different brands when they were on sale and then I'd end up with a bunch of partially used bottles of shampoo, cause I always ended up going back to my fave. I'm tempted now with all the frees. Anyone else like this or is it just me? I don't think people here sell stockpiles at garage sales, I've been to a lot in my area and have never seen it. The flea market, yes. Not sure if I would ever have enough of a stockpile to warrant a trip to the flea market.....so I'm having trouble deciding what good deals to go for and which to pass on.....For instance, I'm thinking about getting one of those Polaroid cameras even though I don't need it at all, just cuz it is such a great deal.....Or is it a better deal just to hang on to whatever oop I would have spent?????? |
