My ShopRite was out of two items today that I wanted: the Marcal napkins that were $1.49 and the Chicken of the Sea albacore tuna that was Super Couponed at 2/$.88 (what a deal!). So they substituted the Mardi Gras napkins and the Starkist Albacore.

What's great is that they scan the shelf tag so I could use the Marcal qs anyway.

Does your store substitute readily? Or do you prefer rainchecks?

Luckily, my store is not often out of stock, but on the occasions that they are they have offered subs about 75% of the time. I don't mind the raincheck and usually I prefer that since a sub would require me to navigate the store again! By the time I get to CS to ask for a raincheck my kids are usually DONE!

The New Paltz store has set up a kind of dias/cubby in between the two middle registers. I usually ask there (right to the source) since the CS usually calls them anyway. At least I don't have to go all the way back to the desk. Like you, my kids are DONE by that point as well.

Today I left them with my DH right after he got home from work and went by myself. HA! What a treat for me!

I wish my store worked out like yours. Mostly I'll notice my local ShopRite doesn't like to hand out Rainchecks if they can substitute, but they won't accept the coupon b/c it's not the same product.

The store by my work hands out the rain checks a lot easier but I don't go there that often.

BTW I e-mailed Mardi Gras a compliment and received a coupon from them a week or so later. You got a grat substitution b/c I think the Mardi Gras napkins are a lot more expensive.

My store will substitute- and they stock on the shelf where the original is with a sign so you don't have to go back. Sometimes they scan the original shelf tag (easier to still use coupons) and sometimes they don't. But if I go to customer service, they will usually give a raincheck if i say i can't use the substitution because of coupons. I love my shoprite!

In my experience my shoprite has never offered a substitute item when a sale item was sold out. I've always been given rain checks, but I don't mind too much unless it was an item I really needed or had an expiring coupon for.

OT
When you email compliments to companies, do you request coupons in your email to them? Or do you just compliment them and hope they send you some? (sorry, I haven't done that before and I'm curious)

No I used to but I've learned from posters on here that just a great compliment goes a long way. It works most of the time even when they just e-mail back saying thank you I'll find coupons in the mail not much later.

After I praise them I always write Thank you, then under my name I'm sure to include my mailing address and e-mail address. HTH's

Continuing the OT: I recently emailed about two products: Ziploc zipper bags and Hefty garbage bags.

With the Ziploc, I had tried the new zipper bags with marinated chicken and it leaked in my refrigerator. I complained about this and within one business day they sent me an apologetic email and snail mailed three free coupons for any Ziploc. I like the old Ziploc bags better and will return to them.

With the Hefty cinch sak kitchen garbage bags, I wrote to them complimenting them about their new packaging and how the bag just rolls nicely out of the box and I don't have to pick up the box and tear at some hit or miss perforation. They sent a thank you for the compliment letter with a coupon attached for a free Hefty product of my choice (I think max value is $6).

I did not request coupons or a refund in either email.

Two months ago I wrote to Scrubbing Bubbles because the bottle of automatic shower cleaner wouldn't seat properly in the dispenser and leaked. I asked innocently if this was how it was supposed to work and they emailed back no, and asked that I try again with a free snail mail replacement coupon that they were sending me. I did and it works nicely so I'm sold on the product because they got me to keep trying it.
