This is from May 2009

Supervalu, looking for its next leader, announced Wednesday that it found someone at a company often portrayed as the destroyer of the traditional grocery store: Wal-Mart.

Craig R. Herkert, who until Tuesday night was the president and chief executive officer of the Americas at Wal-Mart, also spent time earlier in his career at Albertson's Inc. and Acme, two banners that came under Supervalu's control in a massive acquisition deal three years ago.

Herkert, 49, replaces outgoing CEO Jeff Noddle, 62, who said in a statement that "the time is right" for retirement.

The change comes amid a tough period for the grocer, with its 2,421 locations nationwide fighting recessionary headwinds and competition from Herkert's former employer. Investors pushed the stock down 11 cents to close at $16.91 in trading on a day the Dow rose 1.21 percent, a sign that at least one observer took as concern about the departure of Noddle, a 33-year veteran of Supervalu.

"To retire at 62 is too soon," said Burt P. Flickinger III, managing director for the Strategic Resource Group. "It's absolutely critical to Supervalu as a competitor, as an employer and a company facing one of its most challenging times in its history, that Jeff Noddle stay on for at least a full year," said Flickinger, a bondholder and shareholder of Supervalu stock.

Noddle, unavailable for comment Wednesday, said in a company statement that he would stay on as executive chairman for one year. No date was set for his last day as CEO. His retirement comes at what the company considers the normal retirement age, according to its governance principles, but the company bylaws do not mandate retirement at that age.

DUDE>!>!>! We LOVE the "complicated" deals!!!!!

Let's see, less product, bye bye blinkies, and trying to scrap our deals.

Ummm, if I WANTED to shop Walmart...I would have already BEEN shopping Walmart.
They need to lower the prices more than just a bit to keep their couponing customers. Hannaford still have cheaper everyday shelf prices in my area!! If they took away the CATS and doubling and product selection I can't say that I would stay there and give them my business. They are the only supermarket in my area that doubles and offers CATS.

This guy needs a new job 'cause he isn't doing a very good job at his current one!

Our ads changed too. It used to say 2/$5

now in a little square in the corner it says $2.50 each

wow....glad they pointed that out....that complex math is what was keeping me out of the store!!!

this is addressed too. We are too dumb to know how much 3/$5 is...so we are getting less of that kind of pricing (or they are letting us know how much that is in a little box in the corner of the ad...

and for those that didn't know, $10/10 is just $1 each!!!!

All I can say is, if these drastic changes start taking place at Shaws, lets hope that they all close in all of New England (Like they did in CT) and are replaced by a different chain that doubles. (Hmmm I wounder if Pulbix would be interested in opening some chains up north? They seem to always have good deals???)

I think I could live without the cat deals but no doubling would be a deal breaker for me.

"Supervalu Unloads 16 Connecticut Shaw’s to Wakefern, Stop & Shop
Feb 15, 2010
Making good on a pledge made by CEO Craig Herkert late last year to divest nonstrategic assets in select geographic markets, Supervalu has sold 16 Shaw’s supermarkets in Connecticut to two entrenched Northeast corridor retailers as it continues to seek buyers for two additional locations in the state.

Wakefern Food Corp., the nation’s largest retailer-owned co-op, picked up 11 Shaw’s locations on behalf of individual member owners, while Ahold’s Stop & Shop division acquired five others..."

Do you have the link? What is crazy is a more recent article featuring that Walmart is RETURNING 300 brands to their shelves because this plan didn't work mentions that Supervalu is still plugging ahead with this plan @@

I agree! There is no way I would shop at Shaw's without double coupons. Their regular prices are ridiculous - and even sale prices are often more expensive than other stores' sale prices, like Market Basket. Only with doubling does it make it worth it.

I really hope they don't do away with the catalina deals, but I agree that if they stopped double coupons, that would be the end for me.

Goodness, I hope this new CEO gets his act together - like someone else here said - if I wanted to shop at Walmart, I would.

Like others have said, if I wanted to shop at Wal Mart I would. I'm not a big fan of that place, that's why I go to Shaw's. I also have Stop n Shop and the Commissary close by. If things change, I'll just start shopping more at the other stores.

They had a big meeting to let them know that we will be continuing to receive those in ad coupons we have been getting lately (hopefully not instead of our catalina deals)....

kind of anti climatic....but that is what we were told so far.

I have wondered about that myself. It does seem like, occaisionally, when there are really good q's on certain products those same products disappear from the shelves until after the expiration date.

Initially I thought it was just me, but since you've noticed that too I'm beginning to get suspicious.

Would the Viva coupons have doubled? If not, there'd be no incentive for any funny business on Shaw's part.

They would have doubled. 85/1 x2 =$1.70 off of 1 roll.

That is bizarre. I will have to look to see if they are back on my shelves now.

I'm convinced that my Price Chopper has done this in the past. No shelf tag for the item the entire duration of the coupon dates, then it suddenly appears as soon as the Q expires. I asked about an item once (Newman's own pizza) and was told that the warehouse was no longer stocking it, so they couldn't get it anymore. Funny how the warehouse started stocking it AFTER the Q expired.

wow....glad they pointed that out....that complex math is what was keeping me out of the store!!!

this is addressed too. We are too dumb to know how much 3/$5 is...so we are getting less of that kind of pricing (or they are letting us know how much that is in a little box in the corner of the ad...

and for those that didn't know, $10/10 is just $1 each!!!!

You are cracking me up!!!

I agree with the others. If Shaws stopped doing double coupons or they stopped Catalina deals, I may be done. MB is so much cheaper that I just can't justify paying Shaws prices. Funny how when I go to MB it is packed and can hardly get in the parking lot on weekends, whereas Shaws is dead like it usually is.

OMG, what was the item they did this with during the Frozen food booklet? I'm thinking the pie crusts or something....?

Dover has always taken down the cheese blinkie machine when the cheese is on sale or a CAT offer. Drives me nuts when it reappears the next week. And its not like they are saving money by taking them away. They would sell double the product if people could save more, even non hardcore couponers...argh.
