| HVAC experts out there: Central A/C and humidity issues
Hi, Not sure if this is the right place to post this...but I need some help! It's a bit long: We bought a house (new construction) and moved in mid July. The house was an inventory home finished in Nov '08 and served as an open house until we bought it. Within the first week, we noticed something was not right with the AC. The house felt stuffy/clammy and there was hardly any air coming out of the vents. When the AC tech came to check it out he discovered the dampers were installed in the wrong direction. The techs came and fixed that and after a couple of more visits finally got the air flow going through the vents. Yet, the house still feels humid and clammy. We have the thermostat set to 75 deg F, but feels warmer than that so I purchased a thermometer with a humidity gauge (measures indoors and outdoors). Come to find out the relative humidity inside the house averages 58% throughout the day, even when humidity outdoors is in the 30%s. We live in a humid area, 30 mins from the Texas coast and are told that's why. I took my thermometer/humidistat to the builder's office, which is a model home, and the relative humidity got to 48% (and probably would have been lower had I stayed a longer time) - their thermostat is also set at 75 deg F. If I set the thermostat at 71 deg F, I have noticed a drop in humidity to about 52%. But I don't want to run the AC that much (high energy bill!). The builder also loaned us a dehumidifier, which brought the humidity level down to 49-50% with the thermostat set at 74-75 deg F, but as soon as we turned if off, the humidity rose back up. Can anyone out there give me an idea as to what's causing this? TIA!

I don't know, but you have good data to call an HVAC company and ask...maybe CS line for the brand of AC you have probably is still some problem with the installation or size of units

The A/C company that installed the units says the humidity levels we have are normal. It's reached 61%...I've done some research and it should be 45-52% if A/Cs are working properly. I'm probably going to call other companies and find out what they have to say. I was just wondering if someone on here could point me in the right direction or give me some ideas as to what could be wrong. Thanks.

Go directly to the manufacturer, skip the installer. There's a good chance it's related to the installation and not the unit. Or they are the wrong size for your space, as brook6stated. All of which is the installer/designer's fault and not the manufacturer. I say this b/c the manufacturer will be more likely to give you information just to prove that it is not their fault. That will help give you back-up to get the installer/designer to fix the problem. If the manufacturer hesitates initially - which is very likely - tell them you don't have the equipments specs anymore or that the installer won't provide them. If they really fight you on giving any information, if your equipment is still under warranty tell them you want it replaced or fixed under the manufacturer's warranty. The installer and manufacturer are going to point fingers at each other so use it to your advantage. If the installer truly is to blame, the manufacturer may push them to fix the problem. In a lot of situations w/equipment like this they have to be a certified installer, meaning approved by the manufacturer to sell and install their equipment. The manufacturer does not want their installer making a bad name for their product. By the way, there should be specifications for acceptable humidity levels at certain temperatures. Check with your local residential building code. I know there are specs for commercial construction. Good luck.
