| Need crochet help
My grandmother crocheted for many years and taught me a little bit. I am now really wanting to do it because I need to do something at night that keeps me occupied as I am dieting and need to stop munching. I really enjoyed this when I did it with her. I need to know what is the cheapest way to start? What size hook would y'all recommend for me to start with and which thread? Everything was just there for me to use so I have never had to get it on my own. TIA

Decide what type of project you want to start -- dish-cloth, potholder, afghan, scarf. Then use a Michaels or JoAnns coupon to purchase the yarn. The yarn label will usually recommend a hook size. If you need stitch help, try the free videos on this website Free Crochet Video Tutorial Introduction : Learn to Crochet Video Series : Tunisian & Traditional Crochet Videos. Usually the larger the yarn, the easier to learn the stitches. I hope this gets you started well. Wishing you Busy Hands! |

I would start out with a larger hook, say a J or K. These will be easier to use until you get the hang of handling the yarn and hook. Also, when you get the yarn, get a heavier ply such as 4 ply as opposed to baby yarn which is thinner and a little trickier to use when you are first starting. As previous post suggested, start with something very basic, I don't think you should go for an afghan until you definitely decide you really want to get into it. A scarf is a nice easy way to start. Walmart used to sell yarn but I don't think they have it any more. You might want to have a look. Good luck. |

I reccomand using worsted weight yarn, and agree with Sandy M about the hook size. I started crocheting with simple projects like hats and scarfs first because I had to learn it without a mentor. You tube is a great place to get tutorials if you get stuck! I used the 50% off coupons at Michael's to buy yarns, and hooks.
