Is Rite Aid Overcharing Customers fraudulently?

I had just finished a few purchases at Rite Aid:

I tend to swipe my card for a lot of things, because I get the points on American Express and it helps my credit score.

So I swiped for a purchase of $0.56 - why is it coming up as $1.56 on my statement?

I did this for a purchase of $0.28 - why is it coming up as $1.28?

Purchases like 18.80 are coming up as normal. What is going on and do other AMEX customers get this? Do other debit/credit card users get this as well?

Are you just looking at the pending transaction online? Sometimes transactions that are really small initially show as a dollar or two more, but when they are fully processed, they reflect the correct amount.

Yea, they say pending.

Hopefully they adjust to reflect the correct amount.

The gas station used to do that to may card, they put a hold on it and then remove it. I would still check with the cc company though jic

Why wouldn't you call your CC company first to see what is going on before coming on here and accusing Rite Aid of "fraudulently overcharging" you?

All I can say is I know I'm being taxed on my coupons plus the item purchased.

Okay, I used to work in management (retail). All cc companies have a fee for retailers accepting their cards. When a cc is swiped the computers do not allow transactions that start with a zero. So the cc is "authorized" for 1.?? but when the transaction actually goes through the correct amount will be input. Also all cc companies charge retailers for accepting their ccs. Amex and Discover cards have the highest fees which is why they are not as widely accepted as mc and visa. Using Amex to pay for such small purchases is probably costing Rite aid money.

I had a company test my card once when I was buying software online. They tested my card to make sure there was enough balance to cover it. Then refunded the charge and then charged the correct amount. That's how its done. Just in case it wasnt clear from anyone else. Freaked me out at first too because I didn't know that is what they do.
