Coupon Fraud?

I went to Rite-Aid today to do the Buy 3 American Greeting Cards, get 1 bag of candy free.

So I bought 3 $.99 cent cards = $2.98 and 1 $2.50 bag of candy = $5.48.

The shift supervisor (who was working the register) took off $2.50 for the candy (an in-ad coupon) and then I presented a .50 manufacturer coupon. He told me because the candy was free I couldn't use the coupon.

I thought because the free candy was a store promotion I could combine a manufacturer coupon with it. It was a rite-aid store coupon and a store promotion.

Just hoping for clarification - If I do have the right idea then I'm gonna e-mail corporate to ask them why he wouldn't except it.

everyone!

If I remember correctly (I haven't shopped or looked at my coupon policy in FOREVER) Per RA Coupon policy you cannot get overage. So using the .50 coupon for the candy would have ended in you having .50 overage.

that's a good question, I wonder how RA handles that issue.

at WAG, when items are BOGO and they ring up reg price initially, a coupon is taken for each one. then at end of receipt, the free is taken off. in effect, the coupon was accepted for something that is given free c/o store promo.

That is completely correct. Rite Aid doesn't not allow overage on coupons. If an item is already free regardless of what type of coupon it is they will not let you use it. Not all cashiers will catch something like this though, or even care, so they'll let you do it. But, they are not supposed to it is against their corporate coupon policy.

Ok! Thanks everyone! I thought maybe because it was a store promotion I would be allowed to combine a manufacturer coupon, but I guess not!

Today i went to rite aid and bought candies and 1 Huggies diaper .I had some MQ and VV coupons. When i gave her MQ it didnt scan so she gave me back the coupon, then she scanned another MQ it didnt scan ,the 3rd MQ also didnt scan. She told she cant take them.I asked her to call manager then manager tried to enter my coupon manually weired thing happened one coupon took off 0.10 cents another $1.85 ,both were $1.00 coupons.Another didnt go through so she gave me back.
When she tried to scan VV 2 of them didnt scan ,when she tried to do manually (entered the bar-code numbers) it only took off less than what it suppose to.
Does this happened to anyone?I had total $4.50 worth of coupons which didnt go through.

You could have thrown in something that was .50 or over and it would have gone thru. There are chapsticks at my RA counter for .50. That would have taken care of the overage you had and you could have used it.

She was already spending money on the cards, and if they were going to allow the overage, the .50 would have gone towards them. So, no need to throw another item into the mix. My RA routinely lets me do this, but I usually combine a transaction like this with enough other merchandise to reach $25 and use my 5/25 coupon. I think when you just buy a few items like that the overage is more noticeable and more likely to be questioned.

Coupon policy:
Buy One, Get One Free
 We accept two coupons for the purchase of two items that are on Buy One, Get One Free Promotion.
 We accept a Buy One, Get One Free Coupon with an item that is in our flyer as Buy One, Get One Free, meaning both
items are free. The cash register will compute any sales tax due, which varies by state law.

I hate to disagree. But, if you read their coupon policy and insert Buy three get One. It would mean you can use up to 4 coupons on this transaction (one per item, meaning up to three card manuf. coupons and one candy manuf. coupon) as long as the amount does not let the total of the four items be free. If this were not the case how could we use two $/1 item coupons on BOGO free items? One is free, that is the nature of BOGO free. So, you should be allowed to use one coupon on the candy. I'm not trying to disagree but I am just looking at the current policy.

The above policy does not allow you to use coupons on the "free" item. It is saying you can still use a coupon on the one you are buying.

If she were using coupons on the cards that she was paying for then she would have been able to use it but since the item was free with RA coupon it is not allowed.

The policy is written so you can use coupons on items you buy. Using coupons on the free item is not allowed because as others said it goes into the "overage" category.

.

I think this is pretty clear how they feel about overage.

Yes, It does allow a manufactures coupon on the free item. If the TWO items you are purchasing are buy one get one free AND Riteaid states in their coupon policy, that you can use TWO coupons against the TWO items in a BOGO than it is CLEAR that it is one coupon per item (even the free item-no one allows two mq on a single item). They treat the $ amount you are paying as a combined amount for both items. The TWO allowed coupons can not be more than that combined amount. If what this and the following post are saying is true than they would be contradicting their own policy. An example:
BOGO free on Vitamins - RiteAids policy allows two coupons
$9.99 1st Item
$0.00 2nd Item
you can use two Manfu. Coupons for $4/1
so, minus $8
=1.99 for two.
They do this all the time! You would not be able to use two $6/1 coupons. That would put you below 0. They would adjust the 2nd coupon down.
It is no different with B3G1 deals.
Why else would their policy state (please read their current policy) that you can use TWO coupons on a BOGO item? They already know one item is going to be free!!!It doesn't fall into the overage category until the total for both is below $0.

I know there's a lot of confusion on this, so I hope I can help. The cashier was right. While you can use a store coupon and a man. coupon on one item, and you can use up to 2 coupons on BOGO promotions, we run in to a bit of confusion on sales/promotions were you buy a certain item and get something totally different for free. Had it been a buy 3 cards and get a free card, you could have added the $.50 man. coupon because you still had OOP cost for that item. Since the store coupon made the candy free, your man. coupon is kind of null and void because there's nothing for you to get $.50 off of. The coupon was for candy, but the candy was $0 after the first coupon. Honestly, after reading that I don't know if I'm going to be much more help either, but I try.
