What would you do? re: coupons & managers

This afternoon was my first bad trip to RA ever, so I would like to know how all y'all would handle this situation.

Here's the condensed version:
I went to the RA closest to my house to pick up some of the FAR items. When I went to check out, the asst. mgr was at the front of the store doing inventory. She was not pleased to have to come to the register. I unload the five items and my three coupons. When she finished ringing everything out, she left the 5/25 out. I asked her if she scanned that one and she said she couldn't because the total after MQs was less than $25. I told her that according to RA corporate, the 5/25 is supposed to be scanned first before MQs. Then she told me that I couldn't use the 5/25 because I've used it in the store before and this is obviously a copy. I tell her it's a pdf and I just printed it- it's not a photocopy. She then told me that she KNOWS the store manager has already told me I couldn't use the 5/25 again (she put the emphasis on the "knows", not me) That's a total falsehood, because the store manager has never told me that and I've never had a conversation like that with ANY manager. She then tells me that I'm already getting all this stuff for free, so she doesn't think I should be able to use any coupons..especially since I already used the $5 Zantac IP. At this point, I am five shades of red out of anger and disbelief, but I just stare at the counter to keep my composure. I tell her that I can understand if the store has their own policy regarding coupons, but that will just mean that I will happily shop at another store.

I asked her what her name is and she refused to tell me! She wasn't dressed professionally (just in sweats) and had no name tag on. I know she's the asst. mgr. because she's made rude comments and accusations to me before that I've just allowed to slide. Either way, another associate walks up to the counter, so I politely ask her what the asst. mgr's name is and she tells me right in front of her. Asst. mgr. then makes a big fuss about needing to cancel out the transaction in order to use the coupon When she's printing out the receipt, I see that it had the Customer Service survey codes on it! No wonder she canceled the transaction quickly!

I am still insulted and angry over the insinuation that I'm stealing from RA and that I'm improperly/illegally using coupons. I do think I'm going to contact RA corporate tomorrow about this and I'm going to avoid this store for a while. What do you guys think?

I have a copy of the coupon policy for all the stores I frequent and keep them in my binder. I whip them out quickly when I have issues.
This "manager" needs to be reported. Customer service is supposed to be number one in all aspects and the manager should get a report, as well as corporate office.

Not letting you use coupons is one thing. Even if the asst mgr is wrong it could be argued that she is still ating in the best interests of RA. This is something I would continue to contact corporate about. The individual may or may not change their minds about it, but you will ave to live with it either way.

Showing disrespect for customers is another matter. At this point you are debating whether or not to return to the store because of the discomfort you feel over this. I would not blame you for wanting to just move on and forget the whole thing and never return. However, considering that this may not be te only incident this asst mgr is involved in, I would put everything down in an email to corporate.

This is NOT "getting even". In the case of couponing it is a matter of business. As to the disrespectful asst mgr, it is the only way eliminate the behavior.

I'll chime in to say that one rude manager is all it would take for ME to take my business elsewhere.
I mean if they have sooo many customers they can afford to alienate alot of them, then I'm quite certain there are similar retailers that would LOVE to have our patronage instead.

Skipping Rite-Aid in particular would be NO hardship for me since the sales they tend to have in my region are nothing to scream about anyway, LOL

That being said, I've been middle management and that sort of manager should absolutely be reported to Corp.
Be certain to tell them the store #, the manager's name, the date and the approximate time it occurred.
Be specific/factual about what she said to you (be unemotional) & include how she was dressed as that was equally unprofessional.

As far as the 5/25 q goes. I have had issues with cashiers a few times over this and I find in my area it is just the lack of knowledge about how coupons work. I AM NOT EXCUSING THIS PERSONS ATTITUDE! When I have a cashier that will not take the 5/25 q first I explain that my man. q's are cash in a way. RA will get the money back and they would not ask a customer to pay for half of their products before using the money off coupon. Most of the time they understand this and will go ahead.

I have had a few times where they need to speak to a manager (and this would not help your situation at this point, but in my case it does). I let them know I have no problem with that and throw in a comment like "it must be frustrating to have the coupon policy change so often. I know you want to do what is correct". The managers always tell them to scan the coupon first and the cashier knows the correct way to do these coupons. ONCE I have had a manager tell me that he needs to scan the man q's, but then I show the policy copy I have and they no longer do that.

To avoid all issues I NEVER hand any of the coupons over until they scan the 5/25. I feel weird about it sometimes, but then I have to tell myself that is what they are suppose to do and i am just making sure they have little issues to deal with.

I went yesterday to my Rite-Aid and the cashier made me give her every coupon after she rang the product up....one product, one coupon, one product, one coupon...you get the drift.... anyways.......at the end my total was $10.00 and SHE WOULDN"T let me use the 5/25..... she said it WASN"T FAIR.... how aggravating !!!! It doesn't make sense to waste my time organizing a trip & not getting the end results...

RA is the worst (most of them) and Corp. is just as rude. I would still report her maybe this would stop her from being so mean and rude to other customers.

WTH, you must be in the twilight zone. Sorry about your store. I am really blessed by my store as today I used 2 of the 5/25 coupons to get the must out of my buck. The clerk was happy with my deals. 1 coupon wouldnot scan out but because I left the picture attacted to it she went and pushed it threw.

Thank everyone-- i feel better now! I did call Corp and got a call back from my regional manager within two hours. Corp agreed with me- the Asst. mgr. should have taken the 5/25 first, and most certainly should not have refused to give her name. It was almost comical, because the cust. svc rep said "oh no, she didn't!" when I told her the asst. mgr. voided the transaction when she saw the survey codes come through. The Regional mgr. also apologized and told me that it seems like she had an attitude problem and he would address it personally with her. I would have loved to ask her to apologize to me, but i don't want crazy woman to have ANY personal information on me either!

I just leave whenever this kind of thinks happens and go to another RA or go during a different time of the day Its not worth the stress or headache to stand there and try to reason with them b/c they cant be reasoned with.

Talk about unprofessional-ism. I went into my Rite Aid and the first thing I hear is an employee complaining and using very colorful language. I was not happy in the slightest. I was tempted to report whoever it was and it concerned me that the manager did not chastise the employee for her language. I think I will mention it to headquarters.

I had a similar experience over a month ago. I felt horrible when I left the store. I wrote an e-mail to corporate, copied it before I sent it, and waited.

Eventually the district manager e-mailed me. He promised to call, but never did. A couple weeks ago, he sent me a copy of the new Rite Aid Coupon Acceptance Policy. It clearly states that you can use the $5 off coupon before your other coupons. I have a PDF file of the policy but I don't know if I can post it here.

I still avoid that particular Rite Aid, but have found one near my parents' house that I really like.

I had many problems with Rite-Aid to the point I threaten to write a letter to the Board of Director over how customer service was acting. Do not back down. Contact customer service.
