Overage Question

I'm seeing that this whole subject of overage is a hot topic lately. Wondering what you all do about overage...do you tell your cashier ahead of time that the item is only 1.99 and your coupon is for $2 - do you do that for all your items? I know that it's very clear that Rite Aid's policy does not allow for overage...a few recent examples - the Finish Quantumatic is $3.99 - total of the MQ and the VV is $4.00 - what do you do? Also Perfect 10 was clearanced to $2.99 - my coupons were all for $3...I know all the cashiers at my store and have told them many times when my coupons are more than the price of the item...to this day, they have opted to never adjust a coupon down...so I am really honestly wondering what you all do and how you approach coupons that total more than the price of the item...??

I tell my cashier before checking out which coupons are for more than the item. Then I leave it up to them to adjust them. If they choose not to then I did my part.

It really is their job to enforce their coupon policy not ours... KWIM?

I don't say anything but leave it to the cashier to regulate. Most are happy to scan away so long as the coupon doesn't beep. While RA's policy is not to give overage, they are being reimbursed for the face value of the coupon by the manufacturer, so I don't worry about it. Occasionally an alert cashier will catch the difference and adjust down, and when that happens, I don't worry about it either!

i tell them in advance, and usually when I do that, they say, "Let's see what happens," and then they scan it and it goes through and we're both happy.

I don't tell them, partly because I've read that they get nothing back when they adjust down a coupon or have to enter it manually because it beeps. my guess is that my store would rather give me a little overage and still get reimbursed. It depends on the day and the cashier if they'll adjust them on their own.

I never mention it if it's just a penny. If it's more than that I do point it out to them. Sometimes they adjust it sometimes they don't. Although, there are a couple cashiers that never adjust them down, so I usually don't bother mentioning anything to them, cause I know they aren't going to do anything about it.

Is that for real? Do the stores not get reimbursed if they push a coupon through or adjust it down??? Also wondering, I don't run into coupons worth more than the item usually, but next week I will be using a q for $1 off 2 rolls of bounty. Bounty is .97 cents and bogo. Will the coupon beep? If not, do I just let them know about it beforehand? TIA!

I don't say anything because generally it's just .01. I don't try to get away with TOO much overage anymore because I love my stores and don't want to cause more headaches.

I would guess that this is a ymmv situation. technically they should take off the half price item because most coupons say that the "equal or lesser value" item is free. it probably depends on the cashier. I almost always have trouble with any coupon where they have to enter the price.

Some "smart" cashiers see that they are on sale and will only take off the lesser price. Some take off full price because the 50% off actually shows in "discounts" not on the price screen.

I have had it happen both ways but in general I try not to use my BOGO's with BOGO50% off just because I am too cheap to pay the other 50%.

My store does not adjust the coupons down and honestly, it never occurred to me to tell them about the overage.

I have told them about overage on coupons in the past. Some cashiers adjusted them, while others didn't do anything. Doesn't the full amount of the coupon get reimbursed back to the company anyway? I realize that if a cashier writes/enters in the sale price for an item on the coupon, then the store will get back that amount. If they just write in the full amount of the item on the coupon, don't they get that back though? TIA.

The coupon for BOGO usually has a max price as long as the max price is higher than the store's price they usually put the full price item on the Q and give you the full price free and you pay for the 50% off one. Just depends on what your cashier's attitude towards couponers is I guess.

I mention it; even if it's a penny as I don't want the cashier to refuse to take my coupon because it might beep

I let them know about the Finish and I recently bought Stayfree with a $1.00 and a BOGO. I told them they needed to put $5.99 on the free as it will not take $6.00 as I woujld be a penny over.

I know that the coupons won't beep for overage so I don't say anything. I've had a manager not accept a coupon at all b/c it was more than the item. She wouldn't mark it down at all.. Of course she was so clueless about their policy that she said they dont take IPs, they don't accept b1g1 coupons with b1g1 sales, but if they notice it and want to adjust it down that's fine, but I'm not going to cause trouble in my transaction if I don't have to.
