Depends on the breadmaker. Depends on the Goodwill. I wouldn't rule it out, but I would look carefully at the individual breadmaker and reject any that look stained or dirty. But some Goodwills may actually get almost-new ones. Most of them have removable pans that hold the actual food ingredients - I would wash this in the dishwasher on "sanitize" and then feel great about my bargain!

Check that the removable pan and the bread paddle aren't scratched. They may have a no stick coating that will start to flake if scratched. If it looks clean though, go for it. I've gotten a few kitchen appliances at goodwill and always had good luck with them.

I'm with bluemoon...bleach water to wipe down anything you can't take out and clean...as long as it doesn't smell funny on the inside...and as long as the pan is removable and not scratched I'd go for it.

The only other tip I'd have to add is to look up on the internet the manufactor website and see the date it was made or check if it's current, you can usually download the instruction manual there.

Also, you can get replacement parts (the paddle etc) in advance just to have, usually very inexpensive. We always end up losing small parts like that, good to have on hand if it's just a few dollars.

Kitchen toys are major, major 2nd-hand steals. I would try yard sales before Goodwill, as you can usually get a better sense of whether the former owners are gross I grew up yard sailing, and you could track the latest cooking gadget's progress from ridiculously overpriced Christmas present of the year to discarded space-eater. Pizza stones, kitchen window herb gardens, breadmakers, yogurt makers, ice cream makers... I predict the next big yard sale bargain in the spring will be the home canning products being pushed as the ultimate frugal buy this year.

I bought mine used and cleaned it well even though it looked wonderful. I still use it and it may be loud but it kneedes the dough saving me tons of time I never bake in it though since I dont like the loaf shapes.

I bought my wel-bilt from a yard sale and paid 5.00 for it a couple years ago. You could tell it was hardly used, still looked new. And it's still going strong.

Hi KHolland19.

I've been studying Breadmakers for some time, as was planning to get one. I found that there were a lot more pros and cons to the different models available than I had anticipated. A lot of people found them unsuccesful and/or fiddly and they gathered dust in the out-house after just a few excursions into breadmaking.

The old adage, you gets what you pays for applies here as anywhere else.

All I can say is that I got one as a present for Fathers' Day in June this year- the Panasonic SD 2500WXC Products - Kitchen Appliances - Breadmaker - Products - Panasonic UK & Ireland and I have found it easy-to-use and produces consistent results. I bake bread about once every two weeks.

Hope this helps a bit!
