Food Filling Ketchup, Mustard and Mayo Jars at Home

This is a quote I found in an article about saving money - I am so tempted to try this at home myself - I am always wondering what to do with those packets.

Here is the quoted comment - they bought a house

Stock Up on Condiments

"When we were saving for our first house, I would cut back by keeping the ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise packets from fast-food restaurants and filling bottles at home. We even had close family members save the packets for us! In addition, we never purchased drinks and always took our orders to go. We drank water from a thermos or purchased soft drinks on sale or with coupons.

"The way registers were set up at the time, we'd sometimes make money on items that didn't cost a lot to begin with. In addition, we had coupons that were doubled. This gave us more off than the original cost of the item. Since we wanted to save money and make as large a down payment as we could for our home, we figured EVERY penny counted, which it did."

i read this too, but i think my time is worth more than filling a ketchup bottle one packet at a time. i just stock up when i can get it for 20 cents a bottle and be done with it.

I save our fast-food condiment packs and keep them in a container in a kitchen drawer, but I wouldn't take the time to empty them into bottles.

I do save packets but I don't waste the time to fill up the bottles. I put the packets in the fridge and if we have hotdogs or fries I'll put out some packets instead of the bottles. I also send the packets in school lunches

I keep a tray in my fridge that is full of the little packets of ketchup, mustard, mayo etc. I use them in my little one's lunch box for sandwiches or chicken nuggets etc.

We also keep our packets in a tray in the fridge and in my purse and on the floor of the car. We like to keep our ketchup options open.

I don't do this since I talked to a person who worked in a place where people took things like this and said someone has to pay for it. I agreed with her. How much does a bottle of mustard cost? 59 cents maybe but those little packets cost the places money. That cost then has to be passed on to the customer. It is one thing if you accidentally take a few too many and do not want them tossed but she has seen people take handfuls and put them in their purse, which is wrong.

If they put the packets on my tray or in the sack I keep them, I don't ask for them. I don't really like mayo, mustard, or ketchup.......so I do take them home, or there wouldn't be any.

I save all the napkins they give you at fast food restaurants; I haven't had to buy those in years. And I'm not taking them out of the napkin holders, either. This is just from all the extra ones they stuff in the drive-through bags without me asking!

Same here, we always end up with extra napkins, ketchup, mustard, mayo, salsa, fork/spoon packets. We save them and just pull a couple out when we need them.

LOL I couldn't agree. I never have the packets since we NEVER eat fast food. We haven't for about 8 yrs. But if I had them I'd use them in their packets and not empty them.

I save the packets to take camping-I do not get extras but on the rare occasions we do get take-out/fastfood with seven people we always get multiple condiments, which I save for our trips. Taco bell sauce packets have saved the day.

My mother was doing that with the bbq packets from McD's a long time ago. I asked her what/why. She calmly explained to me that it only takes 16 to fill the bottle, why not do it?

Personally, if I get extra I'll put them in the mini picnic container we have going in the truck, but we're not going out of the way to get them. Just not worth the extra hassle
