I have some ?'s about ice cream makers. Is it cheaper to make you own ice cream? Do you own one? If so which brand do you own? Please post a picture of it. How much did it cost? Pro's & Con's of your ice cream maker? Do you have the kind that requires rock salt? How often do you use your ice cream maker? Thanks Last edited by NoahsMomma; 04-29-2008 at 11:19 AM. Umm, I don't think it is cheaper, unless you already have the ingredients on hand, but cream and eggs alone are more then a good ice cream sale. Don't know the brand of mine for sure, I am thinking Krups?? It cost about $60. It has a part that you put in the freezer, so it doesn't require rock salt. When we first got it we used it about once a month for 2 years, I haven't used it in over a year though ( we have had it about 7 years) |

Got mine as a gift a few years ago.... Totally not worth it! It's expensive to buy all of the stuff to make your own, you can get 3 or 4 1/2 gallond for the cost of the stuff to make your own! Another thing: it takes forever!! I have not used mine in about a year, it's easier ( and tastes just as good) to go to the store and buy some! |

My question is this - can you use it to make a lower-sugar/healthier version of ice cream? I'd like to be able to do that for my kids. I don't know if it needs a certain formula to "set up"

We have 2 ... - an old fashioned one that requires rock salt -- got it for our wedding 8 years ago. We rarely use it since the motor broke and cranking manually gets old fast... White Mountain Freezer Traditional Electric Ice Cream Maker - Cooking.com - a cuisinart one where you freeze part of it (like the PP). Love it Cuisinart White Frozen Yogurt, Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker - Cooking.com If I was starting from scratch, I'd get one of those balls that you roll to make the ice cream. Great party activity, adults or kids would engage with it. I also have a Krups...The bowl takes up a lot of space in the freezer..and the ingredients to make it are not cheap! I'd rather buy ice cream when its on sale!

It's not cheap to make home made ice cream, but it sure is yummy! I have the attachment for my kitchen aid mixer. I love it!

We have the old fashion that requires salt (any salt will do, but u use less rock salt vs table salt). It is more expensive, but I make sugarless (i sweeten with just honey or fruit) ice cream with lowfat ingredients and fresh fruit. I don't buy ice cream at the store any way (try to keep HF corn syrup out of the house for health reasons). So this is our only option. I want to check into one of those soft serve frozen yogurt machines....Frozen yogurt has just so much more nutrition than cream or half-n-half.

My boyfriend won a Cuisanart (?) one in an auction and we like using it. Bowl needs to be put in freezer for a day or two before which takes up room. I would recommend making it from scracth and not using the packs like they sell at Walmart - I did not like them. It is nice to add whatever you want and of course you can make frozen yogurt etc.

has anyone tried one of the ice cream balls? I've thought about getting one, just to keep the kids busy this summer when the family gets together. But wondered if it really worked well and how long does it take to make the ice cream? thanks! |
