Thanks NJMom for this timely post! I am looking for a new vacuum cleaner as well and having difficulty deciding which brand/style, etc. We have a combination of hard surfaces and carpets so I really like the idea of easily going from one type of surfce to the next without having to stop and adjust anything to accomodatge the change in surface type. We are on the fence about switching out of carpet to hardwood in the upstairs bedrooms. If we do the entire house would be hard surfaces to I don't think I could justify the cost of a Kirby. However, if the Dyson does all types of surfaces easily that would be more practical. Do all the Dyson's work the same way - going from one surface to another without the need to adjust anything? Thanks!

My vote is for the Eureka SmartBoss. We have a cat and this vac picks up everything. I bought it thru Amazon for the best price. It's not made for the Grandmother, because it's heavy duty and provides a good workout. I'm happy!

I have a Dyson and I'm very happy with it. If you have a Bed Bath & Beyond near you, you can use the 20% off coupon to save $80. They sell for $399 w/o the coupon.

Love my Kirby...when I clean the carpet w/shampooer it leaves it looking like new. At the beginning it was hard to use it, but now I got it down packed. Everyone ask why my carpet look so nice, but their looked awful and dirty...I tell them that I keep them clean with my kirby... !!

I love my Dyson!!! So worth it, it picks so much up it's amazing. I mostly use it on my 1st floor rooms. I will also say I love my Roomba Robotic vacuum. I use it to clean my whole upstairs floor - I have the scheduler model and it's programmed to run 4x a week. It's fabulous! Plus it vacuums for me whether I'm home or not. Good luck!

I have a Bissell Lift-Off Bagless Deluxe and IT'S HORRIBLE. Bought it a few years ago and it was expensive and completely not worth it. The turbo brush attachment stopped working after the second time we used it. The indicators to tell you when the filters are too clogged are also useless. It wasn't sucking up anything so I checked the filters anyway and the dirt and hair was so thick there's no way any air could get through. The motor makes this crazy, loud noise all the time. All I can say is - don't get this one! When I can find a good deal I'm getting a Dyson or Kirby. Consumer Reports gives the Kirby better ratings.

we bought a Dyson a couple years ago. We have 4 kids and animals in the house and I vaccum like mad...I have OCD when it comes to my floors for some reason I feel like if my floor is clean than the rest of the house is too (which is so not true but hey...if it makes me happy...hahaha)anyway we went through a vaccum every 6 months to a year. Granted these vaccums were from Walmart so..there you go...but I digress my dh was when we went through 2 vacuums in a 6 month time frame and he went to Sears (only place close..not a Sears fan) and we were looking at vaccums and he picked out the Dyson Animal...I was shocked but gladly took it! ![]() had it ever since. It did need fixing once and we took it to Sears..they sent it off..Dyson fixed it and sent it back..no cost to me! I am happy!

I think it's the most recent issue of Consumer Reports that has the vacuum ratings. Sorry, I don't own it but saw it at a relative's house or I'd give you the summary.

Stay away from the bagless vacuums. We have one and it sucks ( ) well not now, we are having problems again! That and if you get a bagless do not use any carpet powder it will ruin your vacuum!

Right now it looks like we are going to get a Sebo X4. Haven't ordered it yet, though.

Own the Dyson for four years....good vacuum but HEAVY....my neighbors up the street were Orek dealers for years and they let me borrow the Orek vacuum....it grooms the carpet nicely and picks up fur the first pass through...downside, you have no on board attahcments and have to use their canister vacuum (double work in my opinion).....looking into buying a Miele canister vacuum (getting rid of my carpet)

I have the red Dyson I bought from Target. I HATE IT! I have to go over something 2-3x for it to pick it up. And yes, I clean out the canister and filter ALL THE TIME! Sometimes it will get itself into a mode where it sucks so hard I can barely push it. Maybe I have a lemon...I wish I'd saved myself $250 and bought a Bissell or Hoover for $150. I should also add I dislike the attachment--it's hard to use; doesn't bend easy. Really, not trying to be difficult. For $400, I should LOVE IT! |
