Eek! $3 is definitely a bit much...Sam can deal with 1/2 watered down V8 splash for a little longer As sad as it sounds, that's the ONLY way I can get Veggies into her...what am I in for? Thanks for the welcome backs!!!!

If it has to be on a spoon, she won't eat it. I'm not sure what my mom did, but the last time she was here, Samantha stopped eating from a spoon - not matter WHAT it is (and mac & cheese is her favorite). I've been contemplating getting some painter's drop clothes, stripping her down to her diaper, and putting a big "blob" of food down in the middle of the "protective area" and "letting her dig in." Other than that, it's chicken nuggets, pretzels, Kashi TLC bars, fruit snacks, etc. I have been giving her a bottle of Toddler formula every night because I'm afraid she's not getting enough nutrients. The pediatrician said that she would eat when she's hungry, and as long as she's eating, not to worry (insert shrug here)

we have similar thing going here- I swear cayden survives on 3 cheerios some days- then others she eats and eats and eats. All fruits, and starches though- noodles, potatoes, bread, popcorn and the starches go on- however she drinks I kid you not better than a half gallon of milk a day. Dr says she is doing fine but you wonder you know? only meats we can get in her are hot dogs or bacon...nice and healthy but she does it PB by the ton. Speaking of moms- mine started cayden with dipping cherry tomatoes and fruit in sugar....um she ate them fine before so why did we need to dip them?? now its the only way she eats tomatoes or berries

(LOL to the cherry tomatoes) Same here with the starches, etc. I haven't tried PB&J yet - I'm extremely nervous about the whole PB allergic reaction thing - since we live about 30 mins from the nearest hospital - but then again, I can't keep her from everything for that reason - we'll start PB&J tomorrow - I'll let you know how that goes. Samantha only does 1 bottle of milk in the morning - DH's family has a problem with being lactose intolerant and it's showing signs with her - poopy butt after every milk bottle (like clock-work). I'm going to find an alternative (soy milk perhaps) and start giving her more. It just doesn't "feel" right to eat a great dinner and then look at your kid eating a chicken nugget, drinking V8 splash, and a cup of Cheerios for desert - ya know?

I've been wondering where you were! Thought you had fallen off the edge of the earth! I had (and still have) picky kids. They just go through phases like that. What I read and what works for my kids (even the one who would ONLY eat crunchy things until she was over two) was to put a little of the other foods on their plates whether or not they would eat them. Sure, those spoonfuls end up on the floor and in the garbage, but eventually they will try it (honestly). Just don't let them turn it into a battle of wills because they will always win. Be nonchalant and act like it's no big deal. It takes 10-20 times of being introduced to a new food until most kids start to eat it. It's when you try to force them to eat it that they plant themselves and refuse to ever taste it. Just my two cents of what worked for my three kids. BTW, the pickiest of the three who only ate crunchy foods now eats stuff I won't eat but that my husband does (like clam chowder, shrimp and lobster), she eats saurkraut like me, and just started eating hot wings (and she used to never eat hot foods.) Still not so many cooked veggies, but she loves salad and raw veggies with dip. Your daughter will eventually eat a lot better if you keep introducing it gently. |

I didn't so much try to introduce new things at every meal as I just went about our normal meal routine. I made dinner for my husband and I and just put a little of each on their plates. With my pickiest, I did often make her one extra item I knew she would eat if I was sure she wouldn't touch the rest just so she ate something. I didn't want to get in the habit of making separate foods for everyone. But if you make separate foods for now, I'd probably only introduce one new thing at a time for dinner so they aren't overwhelmed. Also, it helps to use reverse pyschology and make them think you don't want to share your own food with them. It just automatically makes them want it because they think they can't have it. And I still mix in vegetables with other food to sneak things in. It's good for all of us I have a Pampered Chef food chopper (or you can use a shredder) and I finely chop carrots and onions and mushrooms to go in my meatloaf. Or instead, I will use my "all-purpose veggie mixture" that I use for lots of things. (If you are picky yourself, give it a chance before you turn up your nose). For this one, you can finely chop the veggies then saute, or slice and saute them first then put them in a blender or food processor. I use a pepper, onion, package of mushrooms, zuchinni and a stalk or two of celery. Saute until the veggies are soft and liquid is mostly gone. Use a scoop in your meatloaf, meatballs, lasagna or spaghetti or pizza sauce. I love this mixture spread on toast with a little cheese melted on top for myself. You can freeze portions in ziplocs to take out and use when needed.I grew up very very picky and would never have eaten ANY of those vegetables cooked...ever! But it's usually the texture of the cooked vegetables that turn people off. If you chop or shred finely, no one ever knows it's in the food and it adds great flavor. I learned that technique to teach myself to eat more veggies, and coming from someone who would gag on cooked onions and peppers, it really works. And for baking, I substitute half the oil with applesauce, prune baby food, or mashed banana. I also have found King Arthur's white whole wheat flour which has more fiber and is barely distinguishable from white flour when baked. And a note about drinking lots of milk...when they drink that much, they don't get as hungry because milk has so many calories. After age two, they don't need whole or even 2%, and especially if they aren't hungry enough to eat, you may want to cut back or water it down. I know it feels like at least they get the nutrition from milk, but it sabatoges their eating habits in the long run. As long as they get a good three servings, that's all they really need. Dairy has great protein and calcium, so while they are learning to eat more meat, see if they will eat yogurt and cheese cubes as you wean them away from so many cups of milk. Not to sound bossy or anything , just learned these things from my own experience.Good luck! |

| Are you kidding me?? Hijack away!! LoL I've been looking for Rapchef's answers for about 6 months now. (Sorry I've been off the grid - starting volunteering for a group, and let's just say, they need(ed) a LOT of help) Those were all awesome suggestions, thank you SO much!!! The first one I'm going to start with is SITTING DOWN TO DINNER. Right now we both kinda eat "wherever" and usually at different times...I think starting with an actual schedule (ie, eat at 6 PM EVERY night...) would be a good thing. She had her 1st PB&J Friday night, all went well, and so she had another one last night...so at least I know she's not allergic! Yay! (We still have to meet for coffee ya know...)
