Wand Do you have an old dog? How what age did they pass?

I am curious... how old was your "old" dog when they passed? Mine will be 17 in February. She is a husky mix.. we always thought she was part wolfy when she was young. She was always slender and with her coloring everyone always thought she was...

She averaged about 50lbs but she is closer to 40 lbs now. Only aliments are bad arthritis in her back legs. But I believe her eyesight is still good, maybe deteriorating but she still sees.

She acts like an old lady all day, sleeping. but if she hears something outside that interests her she perks up and starts her growling..

or if we get the leash out she acts all young or open the back gate she is right there ready to take off.

Just curious how old your "old" dog was.....

Mine was a beagle lab mix. He was 17. He was always healthy. But about six months before we had to put him down he was diagnosed with a tumor. Needless to say, we were told we would know when it was time. He lived a great life. Was pretty much like you are describing. But one day, he just wasn't himself. It was pretty sudden. But we knew. You will too. He had a long life. 17 is long!! I hope the best for you!!

Our's was close to 15, and passed on his own quickly. I still miss him. He was a lab mix.

wow, 17 is very good for a larger dog. My own first dog I got when I was 14. He was a mini poodle, about 18 pounds. He lived until about 4 months before his 18th birthdday. I was almost 32. It was like my son died. I had to do the deed and put him to sleep because he was blind deaf and really could not lie down on the floor. He kind of just threw himself down. He still knew my touch though. I also had him in diapers. I just could not let him go but I finally had to do it. It was like I took out my own heart and stepped on it. My next guy, also a mini poodle dropped dead a few days after turning 12. That was awful. My current little boy is 12 and half and still is pretty bouncy despite having a lot of health issues but I worry terribly that the end could come soon. I also have a little girl dog who is 5 so I wont feel so abandoned when the inevitable happens. I cant keep going through that.It really is just a crap shoot as to how long they live. I hope you have a lot longer with your baby. I think its just luck.

My dog FOXY passed this past January she would have been 13 in august. She had some issues as she aged. She was a miniature pincher/ Sheppard mix. the pincher was the father if you can believe that

FOXY was my fathers dog and i took her in after my Dad passed in 2007.. When she passed i felt like i lost that final connection with my father.. I was really hard. I always felt my father was watching over me with the dog.. She was so protective of me.. I miss her. Sometimes i catch myself calling my SIL's dog her name..

My first dog lived the longest, he was a miniature poodle and he was 12 when he passed. I'd already gotten married, my parents went out for 4th of July. I would've gone over if I'd known, he was terrified of fireworks. They found him, curled up behind the toilet, when they got home. I never quite forgave them. I was hysterical - my husband at the time thought a person died.

We recently lost our dachshund. She'd been sick on and off, get kept trying stuff. She died this spring at 7 years

I'm down to one poodle, he's my last. He's 5, hoping he outlives me

As I said my first really permanent dog was a poodle also. I have 2 poodles right now. My girl is 5 1/2 and my male is 12 1/2. He has always been very sick I worried about getting him this far in life. He still has a lot of issues and its a constant struggle. I just took him to the cardiologist for an echocardiogram because now he has a heart murmur. He is very high maintenance and now has a permanent ear problem that I have to take him to the vet every week and a half. I havent been to my doctor in over a year. Pretty funny! My girl has had issues but right now thank goodness is okay for the moment.

we had a very sickly samoyed growing up. she had some sort of auto-immune problem that she would always get sores, puss, where nonhair areas meet hair areas. paws, nose, behind... sometimes we would say she lost half her nose cause it would scab and get crusty and parts fall off. her anal glands would always get infected and swell... always had to put her on steroids. She also had cataracts and my parents send her to eye specialist to get them removed and since that she would have eye issues.. at her end she got so sneezy all the time and would constantly hit her nose on the ground and would bleed. one morning my mom woke up and said the kitchen looked like a murder scene.. she sneezed blood everywhere...

she was a cash cow.... but wouldn't have trade her for anything.

right now Nicki - my 16yr old she is healthy otherwise. she just had a check up and senior blood work... The only aliament she had was she would have seizures every once in while...very spuratic. I think I timed them coming after we had company over....too much stress maybe... but I can't remember the last time she had one unless she has them during the night...

sorry to those who have recently lost their precious pets...

My Boxer Ruben was only 7 when he passed.I came home from work and found him behind a chair. My DH and I were heartbroken. We are still sad some days. Probably had a tumor the vet said. We have a 13 yr old cocker spaniel. He is getting very slow and has alot of accidents but I dont care. I will keep him going as long as I can. We also have a 2yr old resuced laberdoodle Ellie. She is sure full of life! Its hard losing a pet but they bring so much love that its worth the heartache . I still smile when I think of things that Ruben did !

So do I at my Alex "Toad" the Samoyed. She used to chew through the fences, her cage so many times.. She hid a ham bone in the couch. buried a pan of brownies in a planter. She was a klepto.. But she used to let me lay her down on her back and brush her for hours. I used to get bags and bags of fur.. I loved it... I'd paint her toenails.. boy did she like to get pampered.. we had a huge strawberry patch but she discovered that and destroyed it, eating strawberries, walking through it.... She loved to go camping.

She also loved to swim. we had an old black tire intertube and when we go swimming she would be the first one out there and all we had to do it bring the tube to the pool deck and she would jump in and float all day..

She was a special one...

Evie was a dobie/shep/mutt mix. She lived for 17 years, she was a amazing dog. Her back legs went, and she couldn't go to the bathroom anymore, we knew it wouldn't be long bc of a few tumors the Dr spotted, but when the legs went we put her to sleep so she wouldn't suffer. It was so painful, but holding her and being there for her, it was the right thing for me my dad and sisters. She was so loved and it took a long time to get used to her not being in her spots or cuddling, I missed her nuzzling my hand for petting or going for a walk. It's weird but I swear the dogs let you know when they can't take the pain anymore, their eyes let you know, at least I felt like that.

We had a peekapoo, Mitzi. She lived 17 1/2 years. We had to have her put down, she was blind and had arthritis. I think she was having memory problems too. She was unable to get up anymore and she would pee on herself in her bed

Mine was 14, he was a doberman/Rottweiler mix. He had trouble with his back legs starting at about at 10. At age 13 they got a lot worse and he went on several pain medications and supplements. One day, he couldn't walk. He tried to but his back legs just wouldn't work. He wanted to walk, he wanted to get up...his body just wouldn't let him. We took him to the vet and she said there wasn't anything they could do. We brought him home so we could say good bye, The next day we brought him to the vet and had him euthanized.

Still one of the hardest things I have ever done. Prior to his back legs he had just had blood work taken for his annual exam and everything inside was perfect. The vet said he had the insides of a puppy and the outsides of an old dog.

I still miss him.

We had an 18-year-old shih tzu/terrier mix that we finally had to put down last year after he lost his sight, hearing, smell, and so forth. I finally had to just convince my mom to put him down so he wouldn't be miserable anymore. It totally devastated her to put him down.

I had one Pekinese live to 15. Another Pek-mix lived to 14. My Lab-mix lived to 12. And my Dobe-sheperd only lived to 10. Now, I have a Lab-pointer mix that's about 10. She's slowing down, but still loves to point at and stalk squirrels.

My dog was in his mid twenties. I can't say for certain as his original vet died and the records were lost. I used to joke that he was going to take the world record. I put him outside to get some sun and he died on the back deck. It was his time and I was glad he didn't have to suffer but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss him.

My husband had his dog before we met, a little pekingnese named Trudy. We got married, had kids, and she got older and older. Finally, at 15 she was in pain and we had to have her put down. A sad day in the Quin house. When we got home, my daughter, then around 5, called grandma and said "The vet gave Trudy a shot and killed her". Yes, but we don't really say it that way.

As you can tell on my signature, we put Sweet Nicki to sleep on 6/10/14. She was a great dog for 17 yrs. In her end, she could not get up anymore and would not eat or drink. We did was right.

Any time your animal is near their end and they wont eat or drink, that is more painful for them to sit there and suffer for the few days. I couldn't let her suffer anymore. We took her to the vet and it was a very peaceful ending.

From my experience, I would rather put my dog to sleep and be able to say goodbye than not having those last few moments with them like with my Big Cody's that passed in her sleep and I woke up in the morning and she was gone. I did not get that chance to say goodbye.
