Animals Am worried about my dog...

My 8 year old German Shepard/ Lab mix, smells horrible. We started to notice this smell last week. In all the years we've had her, and other dogs, we've never smelled this odor before.

She's an inside dog. We switched their food brand, over a month ago, so I don't think it's that.

(It's her behind area...) ... We've given her more baths since then... nothings helped.

I don't know what's up. She's due for shots soon, and the vet techs will look at her then.

Any ideas what this could be? I really love her... and just am scared.

Thanks!

Well.. the stench is definitely radiating from her behind area.

It's not her teeth, but good call....could've been tartar, etc.

Is there something in specific in her ears I should be looking for?
Any specific indicators with that?

We had something similar with our Boston terrier a few years ago. I am really struggling now to remember what the actual problem was. My hubby says it was something with glands (you know, back there). Our vet had given her medicine to take for a short period of time and we changed her food.

We also had a stinky boxer last year and found out that he has seasonal allergies that create a nasty fungus in his ears. He is 5 and never had the problem before. They gave him ear drops and it cleared the smell right up.

Thank you everyone! I think that it is her glands! I feel so much better knowing what it (most likely is). My biggest fear was that you'd say it was internal, organs, etc.

Does the vet do this, or do we need to as well?

Definitely the anal glands. I would have the vet or groomer do it. I know if it was a bulldog, you would want to learn because it is a problem they have.

anal glands probably caused by constipation or not having enough time to relax and squeeze all of the "juice" out while going potty. Also if the diet is not good or if Dog is really old or highly stressed. Change to better food or incorporate veggies like apples w/out seeds or green beans. I give my Dog water melon before he goes to the dog park so he can pee out all the junk and to make sure he gets enough time to just squeeze out the rest that collects in the rectum/anal area. My Chihuahua on the other hand is older and eats great food but she always has issues every now and again, she's 2 lbs, she is just going to get stressed every now and again since the world is just so big. Anyways I just give her bananas when she has itchy butt issues so she can easily go potty, this works for her. I make sure they are not on any kind of cheap grocery store brand food including Petsmart and petco. If the vet tells us to give any of my "kids" prescription food, I'll just cook/make it for them with love at home and just hand feed them if I have to. Senior dogs life is not easy, the least I can do is hand feed them when they're vulnerable. Anyways hopes this helps

This reminds me of that commercial "look mom, Toby learned a new trick". That was so funny the first time I saw it. Sorry had to say it.

I would take the dog to the vet right away. My poodles glands abcessed and had to be surgically repaired after they broke through the skin. He never really was fine again with them so I had to pay a couple of thousand of dollars to have them permanently removed. I will note that sometimes if the dog ejected some of the matter and it gets on them it smells pretty bad so that might have happened, but I would not take a chance I would get them checked out pronto. I know that food is a big issue with glands. The more fiber in their food so that their stools push the glands on the way out is a big factor in gland maintenance. I try to remember to get my other dogs butt checked every 6 months to be on the safe side so she doesnt get a problem like my boy had. I had forgot about the glands and by the time I remembered it was too late, he was in agony and they already had abcessed. I felt terrible about it!
