My cat is in kidney failure!

My cat is 18 years old. I noticed he was not eating last week and sort of listless, so I took him to the vet, who did some blood work. The results were indicative of kidney failure. We are giving him fluids under his skin at home and he got an antibiotic injection. I don't know what else to do for him. He will only lick up a little gravy from his food and now his breathing is lobored. I just want to make him comfortable if there is nothing else I can do. Anyone else ever dealt with this?

I've lost 2 cats to kidney failure. One was sudden onset-we had to have her euthanized w/in 2 days. The other was chronic kidney failure-the vet left it up to our judgment. She said we would know when it was time and we did.She lived about 6 months. I'm so sorry.

There is prescription KD, which cats often don't like. Royal Canin has a newer prescription food that cats seem to like. Ask your vet about that. There are, as I understand it, 2 formulas. The one my cat was on came in the smaller cans. She ate it, and her 2 siblings now get a small bit as a treat until I finish off the last few cans. (Morsella died yesterday. She had lots of things wrong, not just CRF.)

I had that problem years ago with a manx I owned when I started to notice he looked sick I took him to the vet and they told me he had kidney failure. My vet told me it can be very painful for them I had him put to sleep right then I couldnt let him suffer. Iam so sorry for you I love my five cats like children..

Have you tried baby food--chicken or turkey, no salt added?

I know what a difficult decision you are facing, however, I hope you will do the truly humane thing and end your poor cat's suffering. Our cat had diabetes for years and we struggled for months with the question of when to have her euthanized. In the end, we realized we let her suffer for far longer than she should have just because of our reluctance to make the decision.

our 13 yr old is in early stages of failure also, as per blood work that was done early this year. We started on the KD but it's hard because there is another cat in the house. My thoughts are with you, 18 yrs is really marvelous! I never had one live that long.

The vet gave me some cans of the Hill's prescription diet KD, however he wouldn't touch it. I have pureed some tuna and added extra water and he has begun eating that. I think I will offer him some more of the KD today, just to see if he will have any of it. He seems to be feeling some better today!

That's a low protein diet. Some vets think that low protein diets will slow down kidney failure. I really don't know much about it. You will have to mix together his new and old food for a bit otherwise he probably won't ever eat it. I'm glad he's feeling better today. At 18 years, he's an old fellow but as long as he's not in pain and you have his kidney failure under control, I see no reason he can't live longer.

Exactly! As long as he doesn't seem to be uncomfortable and can still function, we won't put him down. I think we'll know.

Cats can live for many years with kidney failure or diabetes. I do know more about diabetes because my fiancÚ's grandfather has a cat with it. As long as they are on a good diet and you check blood glucose levels and administer insulin as needed, they should be just fine as you would expect a human with diabetes to be with proper care. One of the things I think vets and pet caregivers make a mistake on is the diet. Even the prescription diets aren't suitable for a diabetic cat, they contain fillers which raise glucose levels unnecessarily. A good high quality diet and blood glucose monitoring should keep a diabetic cat as healthy as any other as long as it's caught early.

Please keep in mind that you can't just keep feeding him tuna though. It doesn't have the correct nutritional requirements for a kitty. Taurine, for example, isn't present in cooked food and is vital for a cat. It is added to cat food as a supplement after the cooking is taken care of.

I'm going to try to introduce some of the prescription food into the tuna today. I was getting desperate for him to eat anything, so it was a blessing when he started eating a little of the tuna. He had totally stopped eating.

If vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea becomes a problem, you can try giving him a couple table spoons of pure canned pumpkin (not the pumpkin pie filling, just pure pumpkin with no additives). Squash baby food without any additives also might help. Ask your vet before though.

Check out this website too: Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Kidney Disease - Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatments and How to Cope With It

I'm rather interested in cat health so I read a ton about it but I don't a lot about CRF so I guess I'll be looking for new books.

Oh and I wanted to ask, has a vet ever gave him any type of pain medication?

There is a medication called Metacam that is often used for cats in the US but it is known to cause kidney failure. Vets keep using it despite the giant DO NOT USE IN CATS warning on the box.

sorry to hear about your cat, I lost my 17 year old boy about 4 months ago and I still constantly miss him. When he was in last few days and didn't want to eat regular cat food I got him to eat some sardines (the kind for humans) and the lactose free milk.

I read if the kidney failure is caught early on you can try and extend their life a little longer, it might involve giving him fluids at home and the special diet cat food for it. It's a bit of work. And yes, I think you will know when it's time to put them down- really you just know, when they can't go to the bathroom anymore, aren't cleaning themselves, aren't eating, crying out in pain, etc.. I don't like to give up on my pets till I feel there is no hope left for them.

I'm sorry for your loss!

There is a medication called Metacam that is often used for cats in the US but it is known to cause kidney failure. Vets keep using it despite the giant DO NOT USE IN CATS warning on the box.

No he's only been on meds for hyperthyroidism!

She had lots of things wrong, not just CRF.)
