Any Larger Tank Fish Keepers?

My family and I have had a 55 gallon aquarium with fish a few months. It is relaxing to sit and watch the schooling fish.

Contents
7 Otocinclus
4 Peppered dojo loaches
10 Zebra danios
14 Serpae tetras
Random pond snails that are being slowly eaten by the loaches ( yay ).
Live plants
Amazon swords
Wisteria
Various anubis plants

I just didnt know if anyone else here keeps larger tanks with groups of fish. Here we can talk about tropical fish.

I used to but I had chiclids and they are not relaxing! Finally shut the tank down when I got sick of having "missing" fish. Someday would love to have a Real community tank!

Community was our goal with this tank. We would like to set up a clown loach tank but it will be expensive. They need at least 125 gallon tank and all of the pieces are expensive. I keep watching craigslist hoping someghing will come around.

^So jealous. There are so many options for what you could put in that. You could have fish that get really big....like clown loaches, bala sharks, tinfoil barbs, or many types of cichlid.

I have never had that type of filter...but it is because the tank is so big. Anything over about 75 gallons and you have to use fancier filters.

we have 2 big tanks, both with mature oscars and plecostamus (sp?). have them trained to eat from our hands. kids love them. its alot of work to clean the tanks as they are messy eaters but worth the effort. my oscar and i gaze into each others eyes . his oscar is like a dog, always wanting treats. these types of fish will eat anything, spiders, crickets, grubs, earthworms etc. im sure if i dropped hamburger in the tank they would eat it.

No large tank but we have a small man made pond. We bring our fish inside during the winter months and are always amazed at how large they get over the summer.

We have a 220gallon fish tank with red tailed catfish. I don't keep much else in there because the catfish are pretty viscous. We've kept silverheads in there and the catfish attacked them.

We just got a new 56 gallon column tank. We got it because we rescued a pleco and he cant live in our other tank. It is going to be an angelfish show tank since it is a tall it will really suit them. It had live plants and some mopani driftwood. (Helps soften our really hard water for the future angelfish). The pleco is going to move out of quarantine and into the tank tonight.

I am jealous of those of your with tanks 150 gallons and up. Would love to get clown loaches but they grow to be over a foot and need a school. In a few years we will be remodeling our basement and I really hope we can get one then.

We have a 72 gallon tank that was a community tank until my boys decided it would be a good idea to go fishing in it! We had several angels, tetras, dinos, mollies, guppies, several small catfish breads, madacasgars, and I am sure I am missing something . It was so pretty to watch and unwind to everynight

The plans were to upgrade to a tank twice as large when they got larger....they only made it a year with my boys. Now we just have Cichlids all different varieties. Every now and again we discuss doing another community with our smaller tanks, but I just don't think it would get the same effect.

I hope my kids never do that. They are 3 and 2 so hopefully they will learn. I would feel so bad if that happened....I am so sorry.

They were 3 and 5 at the time...they said mom we were catching and releasing. They were really upset when they all died...it was just the shock the fish were scared to death. Really it was our own fault we took them fishing the day before and they were asking questions comparing the fish they were catching with the ones we had at home.

To keep the questions down we told them that there really wasn't much difference between them. Big mistake, they had to learn about life and death that day. Not sure what broke my heart more the fish dying or the boys realizing they killed them. Needless to say I broke out my old baby monitor so that if I needed to be outside I can hear them !

^In my states the law is kinda funny about native fish. You can have them if you can prove you bought them from a pet store and didnt catch them. The law doesnt address if your bought fish spawn and you wind up with babies.

We have a 60 gallon tank for our red ear slider, George. He has a few friendly small schooling fish in there to give more appeal to the tank and fortunately he doesnt eat them. We raised him with a goldfish from when he was a tiny little thing so he never messes with them. We used to do live plants but he eats the roots. We had a huge 4 year old black plecostomus he was about 2 foot long when he died (blood infection ) The guy at the pet store said they've never seen one that big before in someones personal tank. We got him when he was only a few inches, there was a funeral when he died. We plan on going up to a 100 gallon acrylic tank eventually, but I have to figure out where its going to go.
