Animals Quick question about pets and pain meds?

Mocha, the baby of our two Frengles is scheduled for her spay next Friday. Because she was born with "bonus" toes (dew claws on her back feet) that jut out at an odd angle, she will be having those removed at the same time. She will also be getting her final round of puppy shots.

Now for the question. When her older sibling Murphy was neutered they said he really didn't need the pain blocker shot because he was a young healthy male, etc. With Mocha having so much done should we go ahead and have her get the shot? Should we do the daily pills instead? I'm just expecting her to be in pain with the double surgery.

Wha are your thoughts?

I would defer to whatever the vet recommends. Never had the dew claws removed on any dogs but they seem to handle pain a lot better than us humans.

When we spay a female or a neuter a male we give them Rimadyl which is a anti-inflammatory and pain medication usually for 3 to 5 days depending on how old the dog is..

I always get the pain meds for the dogs. I've always been given Rimadyl, like 2blacklabs. But, I don't fight with the dog to shove the pain meds down their throat. If they're happy, running around, and appear not to be in any pain, I don't worry about it. I think in some cases chasing the dog down to give them pain meds is probably more traumatic than whatever they're experiencing. If they're not acting like their usual selves, though, I always give pain meds. My assumption is that any change in personality could very well be the result of pain.

I can't comment on dogs much but I can tell anyone who is reading this to not give Metacam to your cats. It is only approved for single use after surgery. If given more than once, it can (and usually does) cause severe kidney damage. Cats and NSAIDs don't go well together and yet vets keep prescribing Metacam for cats.
