Help Sign Help! My cats have gone mad!!

LITERALLY!!

We have 2-cata that are almost 5-1/2yrs old. Both females from the same litter, fixed & up to date on all shots. Have always been unseparable (sp?)..
Yesterday & today they can't stand each other! Hissing and believe it or not growling at each other!! WHY??!! I've gotten out the spray bottle, locked them up in separate rooms for "time out time", nothing works!! NOTHING!!!!
This is a side of them I've never seen, and frankly scares me. I'm afraid of leaving the house for fear of coming home to a bloody mess. LITERALLY!!!!

Any thoughts??

You could try one of the pheromone sprays/diffusers like Feliway. I'm not sure what could be causing their stress/aggression, but my vet recommends Feliway if my kitties are stressed out (like when we evacuate for a hurricane) and it helps.

Call your vet. They will be able to tell you if this behavior is considered normal and what can or should be done about it.

Cats & other animals can sense things in each other, such as illness. I would talk to the vet & have them both examined if recommended.

Did they see other cats outside that might have upset them, then it could be misplaced aggression. I have two 3 year old boys that grew up together but one attacked the other viciously after seeing a cat at eye level sitting in the driveway while he was in the basement window. I keep the basement windows covered up now and use Feliway spray in the house. You can pick-up Feliway at Petco or Petsmart.

I agree with lady_hlh. Our mane coon was feral before we brought her home. She gets along with my cat and our puppy until another cat appears outside the windows.

Momma eventually calms down. But heaven help you until she is calm. Puppy and my cat know enough to stay away. My greatest fear is her returning to feral because my DH loves her.

Keep us updated!

Sure sounds like something happened to upset one or both of them and they were taking out their aggression on each other. I couldn't believe the first time it happened with our 2 boys. My DH called to tell me that the small cat attacked the larger cat and he had to separate them before there was a bloody mess in the kitchen. When I got home they were still hissing and spitting at each other constantly. I take preventive measures now to avoid stressful situations. However if something starts to happen that looks like it could escalate in to a fight, I step in and start giving them both treats while telling them what good boys they are which seems to defuse the tension between them.

I agree with #5... and in my case, I have 3 cats, they are going nuts during the winter time... when they don't want to go out at all because of the cold and snow.... they just attack and fight with each other for no reason. They just don't know what to do with themselves.

that is how two of my cats are if they see other cats outside they get alittle aggresive towards each other when usually they are like two peas in a pod so maybe you have a stray hanging around outside and that is upsetting them.

Out of our six cats, my cat Tigger is the only aggressive one. When we adopted our last two cats, she took a dislike to Luna (all are females and spayed). Luna was still quite young, only a few months old. Tigger would attack her any chance she got. We had to put her in 'time out' in our bedroom. We also tried a water bottle, and would spray her to let her know she needed to calm down. Now they are ok with one another. Tigger even wants to play with Luna, but Luna is still a little scared of her aggression, as she plays so much rougher than the other cats.

We feel Tigger just has a lot of pent up energy, and needs distraction. We recently started taking her for rides in the car. She LOVES it! She walks around the car and stares out the window like a dog. When she comes home, she is totally calm, and goes to curl up to take a nap. She scratched my leather seat with her claws though....! Guess I need seat covers now!

We do live in a small house too, and they are too crowded. We are moving from a rancher to a two story in two weeks. Just ordered a new cat tree for them. We sold theirs at our last yard sale, as we needed room, and figured we would get a new one when we move. They really loved their cat tree though. They all need their 'safe place' to go, and for most it was the cat tree. I actually want to get another after we move (cat tree that is).

We try to keep them diverted in different ways. My husband has made a game out of throwing cat treats and making the cats find them. They love that game. Much better than just handing them out to them. We will take cardboard boxes and make little houses for them to play in. They love them too.

I agree stress can trigger bad behavior. Make sure they have diversions, and a quiet place they can go to.
