What food do you feed your cat/dog?

I'm interested to know what all you guys feed your pets.

My cat is one thing I won't cheap out on. I'm lucky enough to get $5 off coupons but it's still quite expensive. I believe it's $33.99 for 12lbs before a coupon.

Litter is another thing I don't buy whatever is cheapest. I use World's Best Cat Litter as it's corn based.

My cats look at me like I am killing them if I feed them cheap food and they turn their noses at it.

I feed Purina One or Iams.

I feed Diamond Naturals to both my cat and 3 dogs. It runs around 30$ for 40 lbs of dog food and 15$ for 15 lbs of cat food. I like it because it has no corn, wheat, soy or meat meal it is all real ingredients very comparable to Blue and a lot cheaper . No smelly poo from the cat or dog, and the dog poo disapears into the lawn after like 24 hrs because there is no preservatives in it at all. Rarely see qs for it though As far as liter we dont have a litter box in use very much because our cat house trained with the dogs and scratches to be let out except if its snowing he will use box so we usually use tidy cats for small spaces, I just hate the dust when you open it and the perfume smell to it.

For those that feed high end kibble, have you ever consider a raw diet?

An average cat (depending on age, size, and activity level) will consume approximately 3-6 oz of raw food a day. That's 90-180 oz a month, or 5 -11 lbs a month. The best part is that you can use meats from the grocery store and buy whats on sale. If you can get meats for around $1-2 a lb, you're paying less than $25 a month!

Anyway, if anyone is interested, let me know

I feed my 3 ferrets a raw diet. They eat about 6-8 oz a day combined. I spent about $35 a month on food. Less if I can stock up on good meat prices

I'm a vegetarian. I'm grossed out by opening the canned food so that's definitely off the table!

Haha you might be a vegetarian but your cat/dog is a carnivore I'm talking about fresh meats from the grocery store

And raw meat doesn't smell like canned food (that would be pretty gross!) Though i do hate organ meal days (liver has the worst texture ;D). But all for the love of my fuzz

I feed my dog Brisco the kibble that they have at Costco that is high end, but low cost. It's something like $18 for 40 pounds and is really good for him.

There is vegetarian pet food but I think that's messed up. I really can't deal with raw meat though.

I just try to feed higher quality food like Wellness, Merrick, EVO, ZiwiPeak, etc.

The dust from clay litter really isn't good for you or your pet. I don't like scented either. I have horrible allergies and perfume smells don't help nor do I think it's pleasant for the kitty. I would urge you to get something like pine or corn litter. I know they sell Feline Pine at Walmart and other supermarkets. There are coupons on their website too!

I prefer World's Best Cat Litter. It's corn based and you can't tell much of a difference as far as texture is concerned compared to clumping scoopable clay litter. You can't buy it at supermarkets though. I order all of my pet stuff from PetFlow.com.

Clay litter really irritated the upper respiratory system. Corn/wheat based litter are much better.

I've used Worlds best cat litter and Swheat Scoop. I like WB better

Arrow What food do you feed your cat/dog?

scottd09,

Been a cat guardian for 28 years and have fed my kitty-cat furbabies a wide assortment of cat food brands/formulas.

Since our boys are prone to FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) a.k.a. FUS (Feline Urinary Syndrome) we used to be loyal consumers of Purina One: Special Care Urinary Tract Health Formula (dry cat food) in the 16 lbs turquoise bag.

However, when one of our girls was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis (the absolute worst stage of type II diabetes) in 2009 we completely changed not only her diet, but all of the other kitty's as well for preventative/precautionary measures.

Now all of our kitties are only fed:

* Wet canned cat food, i.e. Friskies, Fancy Feast, 9 Lives, Whiskas, etc.

* Jarred baby food meats i.e. Beech-Nut, Gerber, Del Monte, etc.

* or human quality, grade A protein i.e. boiled chicken breast, whole chicken fryers (with bone & skin removed), whole turkey (with bone & skin removed), etc.

Our type II diabetic beloved family cat who needs a human quality, grade A protein diet with daily insulin injection therapy as set the dietary example for the others.

Although the initial upfront cost of this new diet is more expensive than the previous one, it is saving us money in the long run by preventing any more kitties from developing diabetes; thus eliminating future medical bills. Purchasing cat food is always cheaper than taking the cat to the vet.

I have tried to get my furbabies to use "World's Best Cat Litter", but unfortunately, they refuse to use it. Whenever I bring a bag home and fill a litter box with it, they quickly let me know how much they hate it by inappropriate eliminating (urinating, defecating, spraying) outside of that particular litter box.

Therefore, I buy what they like and will use; Scoopable clay cat litter.

Tidy Cats 35 lb yellow bucket $11.99 Target scoopable clay.

Tidy Cats 35 lb yellow bucket $9.99 Kmart scoopable clay.

Exquisicat 40 lb turquoise box $11.99 PetSmart scoopable clay.

I would love to use the corn based litters but my very stubborn cat refuses to use the stuff too, but generally he is going outside to go when the dogs go, he is pretty housebroken and enjoys pooing in the grass, which from where I stand is a good thing

My dogs eat dry Z/D, one eats canned Z/D also due to his allergies. Other dog loves Nature's Recipe so that's what she gets with her dry Z/D. It's easier to just put both on the dry Z/D, but cheaper to have one on regular can food vs the prescription diet that she really doesn't need.

The cats are eating Beyond right now and love it. They get Friskies can twice a day and are free fed dry. I've been rescuing cats for 20 years, have raised over 80 throughout the years and I've learned only the very cheap corn based foods if fed over a lifetime can cause health problems down the road. Of all the cats I've raised I had only one with diabetes that was brought on in his old age by his FIV disease. I had one with kidney cancer, and only 2 with urinary tract infections.

I have learned that cats love water. I make sure my cats and dogs get clean water all day and night. I change out their water 3 times a day. The big dog drinks it by the quart. If a cat gets enough water and is fed throughout the day it will have less chance of getting urinary problems.

It is also best to change food up every few months as they can acquire allergies to some ingredients and it's just healthier to feed different quality foods throughout their life. My large dog has allergies to bugs but didn't start having reaction to food until I started feeding him a cheaper canned food. He is now allergic to beef and corn. In the wild they don't eat the same thing all their life and shouldn't be eating the same thing for life as pets.

I also use the World's Finest. Love the low dust, great smell and easy cleaning of the litter boxes. We use Tidy Cat scoop blue cap for the outside cats. Any other scoopable is so dusty it chokes us to use it and is just horrible for the cats.

It's actually not a good idea to change dry food in cats (maybe dogs, I'm not sure) often. It can cause severe stomach issues. If you do switch, it needs to be done over a 10-14 day period of slowly increasing the amount of new food and decreasing the amount of old food. This isn't an issue with wet food though.

Thanks for adding that. Mine change about 3 times a year and as you say I change it over slowly. I now the foods that agree with them and the ones that don't so I don't even attempt the ones that don't. They absolutely love the Beyond by Purina.

I feed Iams exclusively to my pets and recommend it to our clients at the veterinary office, where we sell the prescription diets for Iams, Hills, Royal Canin and Purina.

No need to switch the foods up routinely and generally transitioning them over to a new diet over 5 days is satisfactory. Been a certified veterinary technician for 20 years.

Iams, Science Diet, Nutro are the diets we recommend OTC.
