Any Cavy (guinea pig) owners out there?

I had to put down my favorite Cavy today and I am distraught with grief. I have had a few people say "oh it's just a guinea pig" but she wasn't to me. She was part of my family.......

It started Monday night when we got home from a trip. I noticed she had lost a little weight. So yesterday I took her to the vet. The vet did all kinds of tests and took ultrasounds but he couldn't figure out why she was sick. So we went home waiting for the results of Lovey's bloodwork. Well, she took a turn for the worse last night. I had to give her fluids by dropper b/c she was to weak to lift her head up. Today the vet called and said that they didnt know what was wrong with her by her blood tests.... At this point, Lovey has now developed bad diarrhea. She wont move, at all. No squeaking, no popping.....nothing. I took her back to the vet and at this time she was barely breathing. I chose to euthanize her so that she wouldnt be in pain anymore. Did I make the right decision????? I don't know but at least now I know she isn't suffering.
Thanks for letting me vent and if you have any ideas on what it could have been please let me know. I have 4 other cavies that I am scared to death of losing. Not to be mean but Lovey was my favorite.....she was an albino abbsynian and loved to play, squeak, popcorn and be very mishievious.
RIP Lovey...I miss you already.

I'm sorry you lost your pet. I had a guinea pig and I couldn't believe the personality on that little guy. I know that they are part of your family.

Oh, honey, I'm so very sorry. Absolutely you made the right decision. We had a lovely little guy named Linny who we had to put down. I had to take him to the vet early one morning when I couldn't watch him suffer anymore - it was like he was paralyzed, all he could do was look up at me. The vet's office was so cold to me because it was just a guinea pig, that I will never go back there. My children were beside themselves. At his burial we all remembered our favorite things about him - and there were a lot!

I wish I could tell you what was wrong. My only guess might lie with what took place while you were gone......could he have fallen or been dropped? I think that's what happened to Linny.

Big Texas hugs for you and your family.

So sorry to hear about Lovey. I wish I could help with, what might have happened. I haven't a clue. I would have done the same thing you did. Like you said, at least she's not suffering and hopefully with time, that will bring you comfort. We bought a guinea pig for my daughter's 8th birthday last year, because she just Had to have one. I have more to do with it than she does. He's too adorable! How can someone not love them. I've only seen him popcorn a couple of times. Just curious. How long have you had yours and what do you feed them?

I'm so sorry about your little Lovey. You did the right thing. I hate to know that I let one of my animals suffer one minute longer than I had to. We lost our little Albert some years ago. He was the personality of the house! Big hugs to you. Take comfort in knowing that you didn't let Lovey suffer.

I had 6- Lovey, Ginger, Mary Ann, Cinnamon, Rico, and Skipper. Ginger passed away back in March from an Upper Resp. Infection. I had her for 1 year. The rest I have had for 18 months. Unknown to us, Mary Ann was pregnant when we bought her. That is how we got Rico and Skipper. They are boys and housed seperately from the girls. With Lovey gone, I know have 2 girls and 2 boys. I feed my cavies peppers (green are their fave) carrots, apples, spinach, romaine lettuce, cilantro, parsley, strawberries, oranges, pellets and Timothy Hay. They get other things too but these are what they get almost on a daily basis. They each have their own personalities. It's quite entertaining. They are our family. My DS who is 10 plays with "his" boys everyday. It's so funny to see them "play"!! I bought a kiddie pool to put them in so that they can play, Cinnamon and Lovey used to chase each other around it.

MINE DO TOO!!!! They squeak and popcorn like crazy!!! It's amazing that they even do this when I am cutting things up! I think they hear the chopping of the knife!!!! Sometimes when I cook dinner and I have to chop veggies up they go nuts!!!

I think they are just amazing. I went to feed them this morning and usually Lovey would be the first to greet me, she expected to be given a piece first....She wasnt there this morning but Mary Ann came over and just sat at the edge, I think she wanted to know where her sister was. I think they miss her too.

Our Cinnamon is a short hair also!! To be honest, I think she looks more like a squirrel with no tail than a cavy!!!!

You are right, bunnies with no tail or floppy ears. But Cinnamon, she has the color of a squirrel or chipmunk - that is what my son says.

I bought 3 of ours from PetSmart and Petco. Mary Ann and Ginger very skiddish when we got them home, not Lovey, she was just laid back and loving.... It was kinda like she knew this was where she was supposed to be, like this was her "home" already.

Cinnamon I found on Craigslist, a lady bought cavies for her child and didnt realize you couldnt put male and female together!!!!! Duhhhh....

I know exactly how you feel! We used to have a gerbil and about one year ago, had to put him down as well. It was so weird he was perfectly normal and one day before going to work I looked in his cage and he was just laying all funny. I went to touch him and he was stiff and didn't hardly move.

He was still alive though...but just barely. I felt SO terrible because when we took him to the vet they found a large gash on his stomach like something had tore him open or something. It was so weird. Anyways, I beat myself up for a while because I wish I had caught him sooner than I had. He was on his way out when we put him down and I know up until that point he suffered quite a bit and I felt horrible for that.

But, we must know that these things happen and we must just remember them and know that they are much happier in a much better place now.

Aww, you aare making me remember when I had to put "Molly", our great dane down. I asked my vet over and over- if I was doing the right thing. And after now having to euthanize two dogs- I know....It is certainly an act of love to euthanize if you feel your beloved pet is suffering. I know with Milly she had wobbler's syndrome ( a disease that Danes can get) as well as a slipped disk in her neck that they vet advised against operrating on for fear due to her age (Dane's don't live that long anyway). She seemed so sad at home really struggling and packing on the weight because she could not move wihtout hurting and would often whimper when she would turn her head to look at me. I noticed she would not get out of her bed until noon on most days and seemed to not be thriving. well, when I got to the vet she seemed like adifferent dog- my vet convinced me that I was doing her a favor and that often times they go down hill so fast that they will nto be able to move or get up to potty.

I think that Lovey was very lucky to have you- I am thank ful you cared enough about her to not allow her to suffer. People that say "she is just a guine pig" need to realize she was one of God's creatures- and she brought love to you and you family that is PRICELESS! My thought's and prayers are with you! You did make me wat a guinea pig- but I am guessing my DH will sday no- I have 5 dogs a cat and my son's new snake...I think we have enough...for now Again, I am sorry.....you DID do the right thing, do not even question it. You would not have done it if you thought she was not suffering and would recover- You loved her enough to give her that painless way to go....and you did it because you loved her!

Thanks everyone, I really can not express to you all how much you have eased my aching heart. I'm coming to terms with my decision and I know it was right, the only thing now is having to tell my DS when he gets back from visiting family in Florida. Lovey was also his favorite (as she was the one he picked out).
Death isn't easy no matter how tiny the creature is........ There love is bigger than most humans.

Posh - Thank you.....

I'm sorry for you loosing Lovey. Folks who say "It's only a such-n-such." (Insert species of choice.) have obviously never really had a pet that they loved. They may have 'had' a pet, but not had a pet as a member of the family. It always hurts.

----

Okay, granted, I didn't loose this hamster for quite a while after this happened, but it's a funny story.

I grew up in a small town. Pocket pets were considered disposable pets by most of the folks I knew and grew up with. Not so with me.

The hamster had an abscess on one cheek. So we set up the vet appointment, pack the hamster in her small cage and off to the vet we go. During the time from home to the vet, the hamster stuffs her pouches full of little food balls.

So in we get. Mother takes the hamster out of the cage, and the vet exclaims, "There are multiple abscesses upon abscesses." Mother looked at him (noting that he's a great vet, but dogs, cats and livestock were the most common animals going to vets at that time) and said "You obviously haven't treated many hamsters." We (Mother and I) massage the food balls out of the cheek pouches, to ultimately show just the one abscess.

We get the abscess drained, and the vet wanted to start the hamster on antibiotics. So he writes a script with a mg/lb dosing, gives it to Mother and says, "Have fun getting the antibiotic diluted enough to give it." The statement *was* a joke.

Mother's a pharmacist. So she got to spend some time on/off at work trying to figure out how to give this little hamster the right dose of the antibiotic. I know she ended up at least quadrupling the volume of the antibotic (IE: if it was supposed to have made 50ml, she ended up taking it to like 200ml or somesuch).

It was *years* ago. But it was rather hilarious at the time. Just the look on the vet's face when he saw the full pouches.

Hamster lived for a good while after that.

OMG!!! That is hysterical!!!

After I bought Lovey I took her to the vet for a check up, she had a slight cough so I thought it would be a good idea just in case. Anyhow, the vet had NO CLUE about small animals, specifically Cavies. He came in and checked her out and then left. He was gone for about 20 minutes. Finally, I opened the door and asked one of the vet techs what happened to him and she said that the vet isn't used to Cavies so he is "google" info on them! SAY WHAT!!!
