Do you brush your dogs teeth?

My dog has had terrible breath lately. Come to find out the downstairs neighbor has been throwing food out in the snow for her to eat!! She needs her teeth brushed but i'm not sure what to use. I have baby tooth and gum cleanser that would be the most natural or do you use regular toothpaste?

Do not use people toothpaste on your dog. It can make them sick. There is special toothpaste made for them available at pet stores or even Target and Walmart.

You can start by brushing with just water though. Although it will take your dog some time to get used to the idea~ our dogs have always done great having their teeth brushed.

I agree, do not use reqular human toothpaste...they can't spit it out like we do and it can make them sick if they swallow it. They make doggie toothpaste...we get ours at Walmart and it is malt flavored. We also have doggie toothbrushes...they have two heads...one is large for their back teeth and the other head is much smaller for their front teeth. It's a nightly ritual in our house and the mutts tolerate it fairly well. Not only does it help with doggie breath, but it makes a difference in the amount of plaque build up. HTH

I buy my dog beef soup bones to chew on. they are hard enough that they don't break off any of the bone and swallow it. I just had her to the vet and she was very impressed with how nice her teeth look for a 14 year old dog.

I purchase greenies and denta bites and my 1 yr old's teeth a pretty white and clean with little build-up. We will start brushing if the vet says to when we take him in during his yearly exam in May.

I definitely SHOULD be brushing my dogs teeth - but it seems I don't get it done..... Her breath smelled atrocious! so I've had them professionally cleaned at the vet's now twice & her breath is much, much better now. She gets all kinds of hard/dental chews to chew but doesn't seem to help. My other dog eats the exact same things & her breath & teeth are fine without vet cleanings??? But then again her teeth are a lot smaller in size so maybe thats it?

We bought a spray from our vet that you put on gauze and rub on your dogs teeth, being that we have dachshunds and they are notorious for discoloring teeth!! If your dog has really bad breath there may be some sort of tooth or gum problem. Hth!

Amadeus gets his teeth brushed after every bath and loves it. Started this since he was a baby to our family. He gets a bath evey week. (I know some say that is too often and may dry out his skin, but vet says ok, we use a special shampoo) We bought a kit which had toothbrush and paste that smells like beef. It also had fingerbrush, and that is what we have to use. He can't even put a whole goldfish cracker in his mouth! It took some time at first, but now if we get in a rush and skip that, he stands at the bathroom sink wanting it done.
We have tried bones and different things, but he really can't get his mouth around those, so they just leaves them laying around.

Good luck!

I've tried, but my dog hates it. If you can have the toothbrush nearby when she curls up for a nap on your lap that might help. I was able to do it a little while she was sleepy. I have a very high energy little dog and she doesn't like to stay still.
