Note that the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (More often known as A&P and it's associated stores SuperFresh, Waldbaums and Pathmark (Plus Food Basics and Food Emporium) has entered into a voluntary Chapter 11 filing today, July 20th, 2015.
They plan to close 25 stores outright, as listed here:

•Waldbaums (2 Westbury Avenue, Carle Place, NY)
•Waldbaums (3620 Long Beach Road, Oceanside, NY)
•Waldbaums (1510 Old Country Road, Riverhead, NY)
These stores will be closing in the next few months, and will be running sales in the near future as part of that.
In addition, the company has already set up agreements for the purchase of 120 stores (nothing is listed, but rumors have about 80 going to Acme and 25 or so to Ahold, parent of Stop & Shop).
There are also ongoing processes to sell the remaining 150 (ish) locations, so there may be further details forthcoming.
In short - for now nothing will be changing except at the stores listed above where going out of business sales will be occurring at some point in the near future. Long term, A&P and the other names will most likely disappear as the stores are bought and integrated into other chains (and most of the remaining ones probably will, as with all the closings of stores the past decade or so, the remaining locations are probably reasonably good stores to have survived to this point).
The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company has more information.

The pathmarks near me have been going downhill for a while - i used to shop there but i'm not surprised they are selling - i find good deals at acme and shoprite.... we go to costco's regularily and occasionally bjs. I also like trader joes.
