I just started PT my DD (20 months). I try to take her to the restroom every 30 mins and every time I go.

I just bought a potty today for my 18 month old. I don't know where to start either but I am hoping my mother's intuition will kick in . We are just practicing sitting on the seat right now and I am letting him know when he is pooping (it's pretty obvious). After a couple of days I will step it up a notch if he's ready.

Try using signs if he cannot say the words yet. That way you may avoid some embarrassing situations in public later on as well. I would start with pull-ups, have him sit on the potty and give him something special to do or play with that is only available while his bum is on the potty, give him a little time and then go on with your day. If something happens, yayy, if nothing, no big deal. I used to give my son a sticker on his hand if something happened; or 5 min with the bubblemachine. But basically anything will work for him to associate good things happening when he does what he needs to. Make sure his feet are on the floor if he needs to push. If not, just put a box underneath his feet. Take him every hour or so, after meals, first thing in the morning, that kind of thing. What usually works is, right after waking up, give him some water to drink, to get the tummy going, then eat something, then go dress and after that, give him some potty time. Usually you have tricked the tummy and it will do it's thing. Then you have a perfect chance for success and praise and encouragement. Let us know how it goes.

i taught my first dd the sign for toilet so she could sign to me when she needed to go. i started her at about 18 months on a potty chair in the liging room while she ate her cheerios and watched about a half hour of tv. sitting on the potty that old was plenty of tiem to catch her in the act and we praised her like crazy. eventually she got to the point of wanting to go potty just to get the praise. with #2 she was a little easier b/c she wants to do what big sis wants. #3 is 11 months and we will start as soon as she is walking, we are in the mome stretch of the diaper/ baby gear/infant stage and can't be done with it soon enough .also you can try sticker charts, big boy undies, m&m's and what works on week may not work the next, so just be flexible. it is also warm enough to take the potty chair out side with no pants and wait till you see him going and walk him over to the potty. i find that the will contine to use their pullups. my dd#2 can go all day with no accidents but if i put a pull up on her for nap she will pee in it. if i forget and leave her in panties she is dry. sma thing if i put her night itme pull up on too early she will pee in it even thought she would have been dry if i had left her in undies. i just don't have to time to do enough laundry to work on over night dry ness. i keep telling myself soon... good luck. there are days when it feels like it wil never happen, but some how we all get there. oh, to get my dd to poop for the first time we got a toy (barbie) and i sat it on top of the fridge and while she was on the potty trying to poo she could hold it in the package and when she was done trying she had to put it back up until she actually went. it took her almost a week to get that babrie, but now she is great. and she tells everyone thats her "poop barbie" .

I don't have an issue trying to get DS to go potty now..,but it takes patience and lots and lots of stickers and toy cars. I'm going to try that barbie trick with ds but not with a barbie maybe a thomas the train,...He still won't poo in the potty. |

I have an 18 month old girl and I bought her a potty about 2 months ago and set it next to the toilet. When I go do my business she usually sits in her potty and she caught on pretty quickly by seeing me. At times when she was pushing, while pooping, I would take off her diaper and sit on her on the potty. And of course praise her if she pooped. She now says poop and a rush her to the bathroom. She has not learned to tell me when she needs to pee but this is a good start. Good luck!

I used m&m's as rewards and my daughters (I think girls are easier) potty trained very fast. I never bought candy for my kids so the m&m's were a big thing.

Sounds like you need to bribe him with something.....lovablechick!!! Great advice everyone..... I am not to far from potty training, but yet it seems so far away. I guess I should be on the lookout for a potty chair...and a "poop car"...LOL |

| I have heard it is easier if you wait, and was truly considering this. My LO is so big though. For height he is OFF the chart and for weight he is in the 95th percentile. He already looks so much older and people are always looking at me funny when they see he is in diapers (he is only 2 1/2 though). I guess time will tell.

Wow some of you potty train young! My first two were both 3 by the time they got it. With my son my husband bought a box of matchbox cars on ebay and if he pooped on the potty he got a "car from the box". I don't remember what trick if any we used with my daughter. My other daughter is just over 2 and was just starting to show interest in using the toilet so we got out the potty. She likes to sit on it but hasn't done anything yet. I didn't really expect her to get it yet, I just wanted to get her familiar with it so when she is ready she'll be used to it.

We helped a friend of our potty train her 2 1/2 yo son. We would ask him if he had to go potty, and whenever he said yes, we would play a little game where we would see who could grunt the loudest. And, whenever he would go poop, we did a little poop dance after he was done. But if he didn't, then no poop dance.

Don't get too frustrated or dissapointed if it doesn't go well now. I first tried at that age with my son and it was an absolute nightmare. Just picture him running through our living room pooing or peeing with me running after him trying to catch him! After about a month of trying, I stopped completely, but made sure to leave the cool new potty sitting where it was in the bathroom. After about another month he got interested in it himself and then it was much easier. Don't get me wrong, he still had plenty of accidents and challenging times, but he was much more coorporative then. Good luck!

This is going to sound silly, but my sister used to float a few Cheerios in the toilet for my nephew to 'shoot' when he peed. He used to love it and get all excited when he actually hit one. The only problem was he wanted to play 'shoot the Cheerios' all the time!

I don't want to wait until he's over 3 to start, but I'm not rushing him either.....when he gets it he gets it, if HE'S not ready, that's one thing, but he won't be late being trained because I was too lazy to try....(and am not in anyway saying that about anyone that has posted) I'm only saying that I don't want to be why he's not trained, if he's not ready, he's not ready, but I'll do all I can to help him along Thanks all!

U cna try all u wnat, but they will not cooperate fully until they are ready. In the meantime BRIBERY has worked for us Seriously we started DD at 2 (Sept) & she was doing great with the peeing then late Nov she regressed. I stated pushing it agin in early spring & she is just really going all the time now! My mom told her she would buy her dress up clothes if she peeid & pooped on the potty for a week & it has worked. She got one outfit for really trying & now is due to get more as she has not had an accident in almost a week!I do not let her have a diaper or pullup on at all as if she does then she won't go to the potty. DS was the same way!

My usual advice to clients are to start the summer after they turn two. By that time they ought to understand and you have the advantage of the weather. You dont wanna do this with the obstacles of 4 layers of clothes! But, some children will be ready much earlier, some later. Some have siblings to watch and immitate, others are late bloomers.

DD turned 15 months last week and has been using the potty for 2 months..Now it is not a continual thing but at least 5 times a day she uses it on her own. Not sure its a good thing, but she takes off her diaper and runs to the potty saying pee pee..We don't always make it. She actually will get angry if she ends up peeing in a diaper. I started by taking off her diaper so she understood the difference between being wet and dry. yes I have wood floors.. Sounds weird but after a week she couldn't stand a diaper on. 2 of my friends did the same thing and their girls were wearing underwear by 18 months. It definatley takes consistancy. DS wasn't potty trained until 2 1/2. I worked and left it up to my MIL. He was 3 when I finally had to remove the pull-ups for Nursey school.

I put him on once and he peed, so he got an oreo....I figured if he pooped, he could have 2....I know he won't go unless he's ready, but how can he get familiar with it if I don't start with it....I'm not expecting that I put him on and he's potty trained...I was just looking for some other tips I hadn't already heard Thanks
