That was going to be my bit of advice too. With DD #1, I was PG with #2. #1 was 2.5 when #2 came so I thought it would be so lovely to have #1 trained before #2 came......... I put so much pressure on her and myself that we were both frustrated plus she ended up with BM problems (she'd hold it until she became constipated and required an enema a couple of times along with mineral oil) and it took her about a year (about 6 months AFTER the new baby was here!)

With DD #2, I waited until she turned 3, put undies on her and went on our way. Took her about 2 days to get the hang of it.

My advice........ wait.

DD will be 2 next week and so far she is just sitting on the potty. she says "pee pee in the potty" so I take off her diaper and she'll sit, but no pee pee. So far we've been taking it slow but I'm thinking about really training her in the next few weeks. Friends have recommended staying home for a few days, letting DD drink lots of juice/water/gatorade and then get her to pee in the potty. I've heard making a big deal about going shopping for big girl undies helps too.

While I was pregnant I attended the Minneapolis Women's Expo. They had a couple of professional Nannies, one of which nannied for Richard Gere! All 3 Nannies had one strong opinion/words of advice... DON'T USE PULLUPS! They said it just confuses the child. Go directly from diapers to big boy/girl undies. However, they slightly supported using Pullups for overnights only! Because it is a lot of work laundering bedding everyday.
My DS is 26 mo and NOT potty trained. When he was about 22 mo he started telling us "peepee" when he had #1 and/or #2. We were so thrilled thinking he was going to start this early. Since everyone's advice, including his Ped, said don't even try with boys until they turn 2. That lasted 2-3 weeks, we would put him on the potty but he would get upset and hop off. Now he randomly tells us that he has "peepee", still for #1 or #2. He's just not ready. My DH leaves the house at 5:30 am and gets home about 5pm, then goes to bed by 9. So we don't have a lot of opportunity for male encouragement I too, will stay tuned to further posts of ideas, tricks and successes!:goodpost2:

Oh, I just thought of another thing

With both of our older children I let them pick out some special undies. I think having their favorite characters on them makes them run a bit quicker to the potty. The thought of soiling Hello Kitty just didn't sit well with my daughter, she potty trained in less than a week!

Take the diapers off...let him run around naked. Take the potty chair to every room he is in. Make a commitment for him to stay home for a week. If you leave, you will be forced to put a diaper/pull up on. We never used Pull Ups except for travel and sleeping. I also used popsicles and suckers. (They tend to last a little longer than other candy & treats) DD was only allowed to eat them while sitting on the potty. DD was potty trained at 20 months in about 2 weeks. I really think OUR commitment to our daughter's potty training was the key.

I don't know, I have tried everything suggested above with my 3 year old....at this point I think it has turned into a power struggle. :-( We are going to have to tell her, "No, you can NOT wear a Pull-Up to the Prom! They only let you go if you are wearing your big girl Elmo underwear!"

I did this with DD#1 and I can distinctly remember saying "Ok, now don't pee on Dora because Dora will cry if you pee on her. You have to go pee on the potty and keep Dora dry. We don't want Dora to cry."

But at some point later on, I noticed that my daughter was wet and I asked her if she had to go potty, if Dora was still dry and DD stopped playing long enough to look at me and tell me, with a shrug "Dora's crying", then go back to playing.

I've heard it works for some kids but I guess mine was the exception. LOL

I'm not saying there aren't difficult potty training kids and it works on everybody...but I do think parents give up too quickly. I'm assuming that when most parents say their kid isn't getting the hang of it, they put diapers back on them? And then of course the kid realizes that's what happens when they refuse to use the potty...Mommy will just put a diaper back on me.

In my opinion, if your child knows what pee-pee and poo-poo is and is to the point where they go and hide to go poo poo...they are definitely old enough to pull their pants down and go. Just my opinion though! I may change my view on this when trying to potty train #2. :

No, we definitely have not given up! We have a schedule when she needs to go sit on the potty. It's just that we still have to tell her it's time to go on the potty - if we don't tell her to go sit on the potty, she won't ask to go. Sometimes she will go in another room and close the door and we know what she's doing - pooping. We used to be like, Do you want to go poopy on the potty? Now I just rip her shorts and pull-up off and she at least won't poop on the floor. So she runs and sits on the potty.

I think a lot of her issues come from the fact that her little sister was born when she was 23 months old. She says some things sometimes about not wanting to be a big girl, she wants to be a baby (not all the time, just occasionally) so I think the potty thing is pushing back against her role as the "big girl". So I try to be patient with her and keep her on a schedule as best as I can. She is doing really well all things considered but still isn't wearing underwear or even training pants yet.

about a week before I just went cold turkey from diapers to big girl panties we went and bought a potty chair and put in the bathroom and she wanted to sit on it and was excited so the next we went stright to panties (make sure you have plenty cause you will go through them FAST ) The first 2/3 days were the worst but after she cought on with the pee pee but it took about a week for the poop to catch on but after that a piece of cake ...... even at night she slept with panties on she would come and get me if she needed to go we also used a waterproof pads on her bed ........we stayted home for 2 weeks without an outing for her to fully be potty trained and it worked after that no accidents at bedtime or anything ........ you just need to be fully commented and stay with it ........ truth be told I wish I had done it sooner with DD she was quite easy
