| i feel like a terrible mother..
so i'm sitting here, 2 year old niece on the bed coloring..and my 9 month dd roaming around the bedroom...my back turned to them. i turn around and dd has a crayon in her hand. i jump up and take it from her. she starts crying and is having a hard time swallowing...cries louder each time she swallows. i PRY open her mouth and i see the tip of a crayon in the back of her throat. by this time, i'm sweating..and almost in tears. i stick my finger in her mouth, trying to scoop it out..and only end up pushing it further into the back of her throat. her eyes are watering, nose running, everything. so i stick my finger in her mouth again, and since i know i can't get it..i try to get it to the point where she can swallow it i NEVER know what to do in a serious situation like that. i lose all thinking ability. and i feel terrible. i should have been paying attention. but yes..i guess my dd will poop a crayon tip tomorrow. |

Aww mama, I know that had to be scary! Thank God she was able to get it down. Sounds like your motherly instincts kicked in, and you did the right thing. You might want to call your Dr just to let them know what happened. I am sure everything will be ok, but it is better safe than sorry. Things like this happen to the best of us. Please don't beat yourself up. |

Shortly after X mas I picked DD up after work , came home, and started doing stuff ( feeding dog, cats, check mail......) while she was playing in her playpen. About 10 min go buy and she starts getting fussy, so I pick her up and sing to her..... still crying...... Change diaper...... Still crying...... Give a bottle...... Still crying........ Well I then start to notice she is drooling alot, so I open up her mouth and guess what's in it? A Thumb tack!!!!!!!!!!!!! I totally freaked!!!! IDK how it got into my house since we dont use them here, my guess is it came over in an X-mas present. I felt so bad! Poor little thing! To the OP: dont beat your self up, stuff happens! No damage done, everyone is fine!!!! |

You are not a terrible mother, you just can't think things like that, she's only 9 months old, she is going to get into MUCH worse things than crayons in her next few years!!!! I'm glad she's ok...crayons are non toxic, no need to worry!!! Good thinking pushing it down since you couldn't get it up! BREATHE!!!!

Hey- don't feel ba- I think I need Poison Control on speed dial with Dominic- First he got under the sink and got into the Jet Dry- we now lock that cabinet. Then he got into the diaper bag and was able to open the teething tablets- I ran down stairs to get something for dinner, and that quick he had gotten into them and was dumping the bottle into his mouth. Just yesterday he climbed into his chair and stood up and reached the kitchen counter where he found the Beano to Go bottle and some how opened that and ate a few! I swear- this one gets into everything- I don't remember my dd's doing anything like this. You are not a bad mother- things happen, and they are quick! BTW- HAPPY MOTHERS' DAY!!!

You are NOT a terrible mother...you're human. It's amazing how quick they are at this age and it only takes a half a second, it seems. Don't beat yourself up. When DD was just a few months old, I was putting her in this cute little short sleeved onesie and I had to pull her arms through the sleeves. I would put my thumb in the palm of her hand and hold her hand to pull through. I felt a pop and she started crying so hard. I thought I had broken her wrist and that DSS was going to take her away from me, LOL. It was the first time anything had ever popped on her like that and it freaked her out. Luckily it was the pedi's lunch hour and I had to wait to call them. It took about 30 minutes, but then she was fine again. They are resiliant.

I'm glad she's okay and she got it down. Since crayons are generally non-toxic I'm sure their won't be any other complications, just the cool colored poop ![]() When Lanah was 5 or 6 months old her brother (7 at the time) gave her an Electrasol Geltab while she was in her exersaucer and I didn't notice it until she started choking on the plastic part. She got a tummy full of electrasol but was just fine as apparently its not toxic.... Every mom has something like this happen, some just won't admit it...Besides, it makes you a better mom because it reminds you to be on your toes! |

Please watch her carefully - yes, she might have swallowed it, but it also could have gone down into her lungs. If it hasn't pooped out by Monday, I would call the doctor. One of my co-workers' daughters swallowed a quarter (& she wasn't a baby - she was 7!) Actually it got stuck in her airway & the ER doc had to fish it out. |

My son swallowed a penny when he was about 18 months. We didn't know what he swallowed, but for the next 2 days he wouldn't eat anything so my mom ( I was working) took him to the doctor and we had to set up an appointment for x-rays. Low and behold a penny lodged in the side of his throat. They then proceeded to ask me to hold his head while they shoved something down his throat and tried to dislodge. I couldn't take it anymore he was looking at me and bawling pleading with his eyes to make them stop. Then they said they had to get it differently. (surgery) Well no cutting, but the whole thing was a huge disaster and was a nightmare and one of the worst days of my life. Long story short. He is fine no issues at all, but if she isn't wanting to eat things or drink things then please take her in. Or if it hasn't passed soon! Also you are not a bad mother. Children will get into things and things will happen to them we just have to be there for them and that is just what you did! So cheer up and be thankful that you didn't panic and all seems to be going fine! Have a Happy Mother's Day! |

Crayons are made of vegetables, and should pass right through with no problem. Sounds like she is a little too young for crayons right now. Put them away until she is older. Live and learn. Everything worked out ok, and she is fine, so no harm done. Don't feel bad. She is ok, and that is what matters!

Hope everything turns out ok. Things happen so I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. If she poops out a bright colored dookie you should post to the "explosive poop count" thread!

thanks to all of you. i know just about every child eats something or another that they shouldn't, i think i just thought to myself 'oh it wont happen to her'..ya know? she's acting fine..so i'm not worried, anymore. thanks again. ![]() Quote:
no no. my niece was coloring on the bed..and my dd cruises around, and i'm assuming she stood on her tippy toes (which she does when she wants to get something) and reached as far as she could..and grabbed it. i kept telling my niece to leave the crayons in the middle of the bed...but i turned my back for those 2 minutes, and sure enough she grabbed one.

_rori, If I can interject my two cents into this. You will never be able to protect your child from every bad thing that can possibly happen to them. It's just not possible. I know, because just about every bad thing that could happen to a child happened to me, despite what my parents did to prevent it. Before I was 16, I had 4 major surgeries, at least 8 broken bones that I can remember, a couple of hundred stitches, and one trip to the emergency room with 158 yellow jacket stings when I was 5. The stings came from me playing in our back yard, when I just happened to step onto a yellow jacket nest that had just been built in my back yard. My parents used to argue who's turn it was to take me to the hospital, because they were so afraid that they were going to be arrested for child abuse. When I turned 16, if I could drive myself to the emergency room, I did. My X-ray file was so thick that they had to archive the first 8 years of my life. And still, to this day, my DW has to take me to the emergency room at least one every 1 1/2 to 2 years for something that requires medical intervention. As a matter of fact, we just went there on the 25th of May. And despite my best attempts, I have yet to remove myself from the gene pool. |

I hope all is well but I do remember when my DS and I were in the tub when we were little--she was about 2 or 3. We were playing and she pooted and here comes the pink crayon floating to the surface. We still laugh about this to this day. YOu are not a bad mom cause Im sure we all have times like this to tell about.

Very scary! Kids get into things, you can't prevent everything. You may want to think about taking a CPR class (infant and childrens included). It's always good knowledge to have, you never know when it will come in handy! I'm glad that everything went well. I have a 2 year old that still loves to put things in her mouth. I'm constantly watching her but there have been a couple of times I have had to tell daycare that there might be a "surprise" in her diaper. |
