Class Project UPDATE ~ Need Toppings Now ~ "Direction Following" My 8th grader has a class project and it is a pretty big grade. He has to write directions for an activity. The class has to "follow along" as he teaches it and the class has the written directions to read off of. I has to be something that most students have not done before ~ so "making a PB&J won't work". So far the presentations were making salad dressing and playing base guitar (it was not good). He wants to do something with food because the kids like that and the kids write an eval on each presentation. I need ideas and the only thing that comes to mind is how one kind in the news did a "how to put on a condom" for this type of assignment! Last edited by mjloves2shop; 04-15-2008 at 06:49 AM.

I do this activity with my 6th graders for writing; they read their papers while another classmate completes the task - it is hysterical watching some of the kids follow the directions as they are read. I then give my students an opportunity to "fix" their papers before turning them in for a final grade. Anyway ....some suggestions:Making pancakes (from scratch) on a griddle Making an omelet Making a banana split ?? I'll post more if I can come up with some...my mind is drawing a blank on other "food" ones

Homemade icecream from a bag! Maybe you could downsize the recipe for the kids to make their own individual icecream in sandwich baggies? How To Make Ice Cream In A Bag » TipNut.com

oooh- or how to make homemade butter and let all of the kids help and then take biscuits or crackers for everyone to try- that would be fun and brownie points for class participation!

I suggested the cubes/dice you fold up then blow into to make them 3D. At there age they all know how to make "poppers" and "fortune tellers". I also thought a non-traditional paper airplane ~ but I got nixed, "Oragmi just isn't cool Mom."

Someone did the omelet. She made it ahead of time and warmed it up in class then walked them through the steps. DS used her directions last night and made one ~ he informed me that her directions weren't very good!

UPDATE~~~ He decided the Chocolate Chip Pizza was acceptable. Question ~ do you think we can say "flatten one tub of prepared cookie dough on pizza pan?" Or do we need to walk through the 1 cup this and 2 cups that? TOPPINGS~ The recipe I found in cookie, whipped cream, toasted coconut, then M&M's. But I saw another that did chocolate chips on top then a drizzle of caramel syrup. I think he wanted frosting as the base for the toppings to stick to. What other "kid" toppings would be fun? I was thinking of a list and the preparer could choose from a list of "bases" (caramel syrup, frosting, chocolate syrup) and then choose the toppings they liked. Like suggest "Add one or more of the following toppings to suite your taste." I am stopping at the pizza place to buy a few boxes for the presentation. I think I will have him take one completed and then take the baked shell in for the other one. Then he can assemble the second one in class as he explains the process. Ideas? Input?

I remember doing this in 5th or 6th grade and it is one of the things that stood out! I still remember how awesome those plain old graham crackers tasted!
