I want to say my mom let me start using deodorant at about 11 or 12 when I was in a "real" gym class in jr high and so I worked up more of a sweat. I think it might depend on your child too - hate to be rude but do you notice an odor? Then it might be time. I'm guessing a more active child might use it sooner and genetics might play a part, some ppl tend to sweat more than others. I hate to sound like a crazy fanatic, but I would maybe tend to veer towards the true deodorants (stay away from the antiperspirants) and maybe even try a natural one like Tom's. There have been studies that show that the aluminum in the antipersperant can lead to alzheimers. And for parents with boys - stay away from roll ons - I was informed this weekend that pit hair can get rolled into them and that's not very comfortable. ![]()

My daughter is 7 (8 in 04/13)and i don't notice an odor when we are hugging, next to each other etc.But Yesterday while playing/tickling etc with her,my nose went close to her underarm and i did notice a little then. She is not into sports besides gym at school at the moment. I wanted to start her off on something, don't want her to be smelly ,even if it is only with the close contact that i have with her. Not sure if she's too young though, and not even sure what i would use. Last edited by beckybac; 12-03-2012 at 09:34 AM. |

DD is almost 12, i haven't noticed that she needs to use it yet (she takes shower in the morning on school days). She uses it only on PE days as a precaution and active field trips or something similar.

As a former school teacher, she is not too young. A room full of 25 kids who are all a little funky smelling is overwhelming. Any one alone is no problem, but a roomfull?!?!?! I agree with the previous poster about avoiding aluminum. My adult son (22yo) only uses Tom's of Maine unscented. It goes on sale and there are sometimes coupons. I like the babypowder scents for girls, they don't smell like deodorant. Good luck! |

I started young, probably 10. And when I got older and was in middle school I would use extra chaning out for gym. As far as which one as a tween I liked the Teen Spirit too. As I got older I liked the ones that has fun scents to make it a little less embarassing.
