Adoption and Home Study

So the hubby and I go on Sept 1st to officially start the step parent adoption process so that I can adopt my stepson.
I ended up selling my great grandmothers diamond ring to raise the money for this so I am kind of nervous about everything.
We expect that if we can find his birthmom that she will put up a fight just to make things hard on us. Our lawyer says it doesn't really matter if she does fight. She hasn't seen my stepson since he was less than a year old and he's three now. She also hasn't had any sort of contact(phone or letter etc.) for over a year. That and in the custody papers she was required to take a parenting class before she had rights to see Jr. and she never has taken the class. Even is she is found and fights we were told we have a really really really good chance of winning.

I'm pretty clear on the whole adoption process but I'm not really sure about this home study thing. The lawyer just said that somebody comes in and looks around to see if there is food and the house is safe and clean.
Does anyone here know what exactly it is that they look for. Do they go poking around in the closets and check for dust on top the door frames or am I over thinking it?

Any advice or insight is appreciated!
Thanks!

They will not check for dust or anything silly. Just looking for a clean, safe home. They will probably also ask you about yourself, your history and how you relate to each other as a family. They are just making sure that you are a good forever home for the child.

We adopted my granddaughter. At the home visit she barely peeked in every room and didn't even look out in the backyard! We spent a ton of time getting everything immaculate right down to the junk drawer!!

She asked us ALOT about out job history, why did you leave each job...also she asked our son who was maybe 7 how he got punished, did he go to school, that kind if thing.

It was an hour, max, and a snap.

We also adopted, 13 years ago and I stressed about the home study too! She was very nice, didn't check for dust, looked around, opened a couple of closets. She did ask some questions about our plans for childcare, our jobs, just general things. Since we were adopting a baby she asked about where the nursery was, (not set up yet, we had an adoption fall through on us before) checked for childproofing in the house, etc. Don't think you have to worry about that!

Just relax, like the others stated, clean your house, make sure there aren't dirty dishes in the sink and underwear on the floor, refridgerator is clean and you have food in the pantry...and that you will provide a safe, loving home for your soon to be adopted son!

Good luck!

Thank you all. Your posts made me feel a lot better! I'm just so nervous about everything! I always keep the house clean and the pantry stocked! SAHM with nothing else to do! When I first moved in I was obsessed with cleaning because I always thought his birthmom would call child services on us just for spite or something like that! Never happened but oh well, better safe than sorry!
I never met the birthmom but when we actually knew where she was we would always hear things about her getting into fist fights and getting kicked out of places. She told several people she would kick my *** and all that. I'm not actually afraid of her but she is a very very large woman. I really hope we don't have any luck finding her again.
