Exclamation please read if you're female 18-49 and/or have kid/s

I got an email from my friend who's a pedia in NJ. Her sister is a pharmacist who alerted her on this.

************************************************** ********

Please read this CAREFULLY. Also, please pass this on to everyone you know. STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in the brain) among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication. Problems were not found in men; however, the FDA recommended that everyone (even children) seek an alternative medicine.

The following medications contain Phenylpropanolamine:

Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite Suppressant
Acutrim Plus Dietary Supplements
Acu trim Maximum Strength Appetite Control
Alka-Seltzer Plus Children's Cold Medicine
Effervescent Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold medicine (cherry or orange)

3D Cold &Cough Berry
3D Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant

If you know of anyone else with small children, PLEASE PASS THIS ON. THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF!

DO PASS THIS ALONG TO ALL ON YOUR MAILING LIST so people are informed. They can then pass it along to their families.

************************************************** **********

Some of the meds mentioned have been on sale lately like Triaminic, Coricidin, Robitussin CF, and there have been high value coupons for them. Come to think of it, are the manufacturers deliberately trying to dispose of their stocks? Many people try to brush this off, saying there's just low risk. When it comes to your and your kids' health, will you take even the smallest risk? Low risk still puts you at risk. Are we going to set aside the warning just because we have a hoard of these meds? God forbid that anyone reading this should be one of those who succumb. Adults can probably take the risk, but are we going to risk our kid's(they don't have a choice) health just because we got it for free? Just a food for thought.

I have received this several times over he past 6 months. I am not so sure I agree with it. IMHO I don't think anyone should stop taking any medication of any kind before consulting an MD. Sorry to bugger on your post JMB :tapedshut

Mimi - This info is old news. In 2000, the FDA asked the drug companies to remove these products -- most did and re-made them without the PPA. Might be good to call FDA for more information.

Here is more information:
Quote:
The FDA is answering PPA questions toll-free at (888) INFO-FDA. A direct line, although it is not toll-free, is (301) 827-4570. The FDA also has a Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) Information Page available on their web site. The FDA has advised that consumers go through their medicine cabinets, paying special attention to cold remedies and diet aids, and discard any medications that list phenylpropanolamine as one of their ingredients.
