Handwriting Without Tears - anyone have experience?

Curious if anyone has used this program as a parent or teacher. My daughter's OT recommended it - she swears by it. It's a neat way of teaching kids how to write by making it fun. I just wanted to know if anyone else has used it and would recommend it as well.

Our OT has used it with several kiddos that I have had in my room. I haven't used it myself, but I have heard positive things from both the OT and several parents. HTH!

My friend is our school's OT and she started using it last year. Seems to be quite successful. The kids (k-4) use little chalk boards to practice their letters. I think the practice with their fingers and then the chalk and then the eraser in a particular order of mark making so the movements become automatic. Unfortunately, I can't give you any more info than that! HTH.

The National Institute of Learning Disabilities utilizes writing on chalk boards (not white boards) to promote brain activity that helps students with some learning disa bilities. The friction caused by the chalk on the board stimulates the nerves that in turn work on the brain. The therapist utilizes (before they advance to the board) arm and hand movements with chalk in hand. The therapist calls out the direction the student is to rotate the arm/hand and then reverses, etc. They then advance to the board doing the same motions. The parent also does these exercises at home with the student.

I don't know anything about the program you are speaking of, but the stimulus may be a good thing and the kids probably enjoy it.

Monica,
A girl in my same age (the other same age group...) swears by it. I can hook you up if you want to know more specifics.

I use this program for my kids. They really seem to like it much more than your typical handwriting program. When we began home schooling last year my 3rd grader could not write, he does now and gets a kick out of being able to do so. If your child is having difficulties I would suggest giving this program a shot. I don't think you will be sorry.
