Classify the word "was"----Third grade homework. DS does not have text book at home. He wants to know if "was" is an adjective. At first, Mickey was afraid. My first thought is verb? Thanks in Advance.

Ds just ran in and shouted "it is a verb, "was" is not describing him"

"Was" is the past singular 3rd-person tense conjugation of the verb "to be". Afraid is the adjective, describing the state of the sentence's object (Micky). Last edited by GreatBearMagnus; 09-25-2006 at 04:20 PM.

TYVM----GBM. Homework is completed and reviewed. The excercise was adjective specific....I should have read over it instead of trying to help from two rooms away. Off to soccer practice now....
