Need ideas for read-aloud chapter books!

My husband and I have decided that we need a break from reading our DS (4 1/2) picture books and that we will be introducing him into the wonderful world of chapter books (probably a little late too). So for the summer, we want to read to him from chapter books only. We just finished Mouse and the Motorcycle and he loved it so Ralph S Mouse and Runaway Ralph will be our next ones but after that I need some ideas. Help please!

My nephew loved the Wayside school books. They were not actually chapeters, but they were a favorite of his. I loved Charlotte's web.

The Magic Treehouse is a wonderful series of adventure books that have chapters and some pen and ink pictures - fun and engaging stuff!

Good time to start the classics. Often we'd read the "real" book say Alice in Wonderland than maybe watch a Disney/cartoon version or movie. Good conversations
Most recently did this with Indian in the Cupboard and The Hiding Place; my boys are older

Both of my DS's were HUGE into dinosaurs. So we read the PaleoJoe series with them.

Chapter Book #1 The Disappearance of Dinosaur Sue
Chapter Book # 2 Stolen Stegosaurus
Chapter Book # 3 Secret Sabertooth
Chapter Book # 4 Raptor's Revenge
Chapter Book #5 Mysterious Mammoth

"(This) series of reptile-related mysteries called the 'PaleoJoe Dinosaur Detective Club' is very big with readers. Getting kids interested in dinosaurs is about as difficult as getting them interested in French fries!" --The Detroit News

They're available from Amazon.

The Magic Treehouse series

A to Z Mysteries -- I highly recommend this series! We read this series to my son when he was 4. You don't need to worry about the content -- nothing scary or inappropriate. No foul language. No bullying. GREAT SERIES! AWESOME AUTHOR! He has another series -- I think called Capital Mysteries. Also, recommend that one for your son.

Roald Dahl books are great fun! We also enjoyed Wind in the Willows and Alice in Wonderland. I think one of the first chapter books we read was Black Beauty. Boxcar Children was okay -- simple. The Moffatt's makes me laugh out loud, but I think it would work better for older kids. I googled "great read aloud chapter books" and there are many lists. Here's one: Great Read Alouds for Children and Families.

I appreciate all these suggestions. I read chapter books very early to my oldest DD, but have held off with the twins. I don't want them to grow up... but I'll start this summer.

The bunnicula books?
Boxcar children mysteries
Black Stallion
Castles in the attic
Geronimo stilton
Captain underpants ( shudder)

All I can think of right now, I hope these help(I am a librarian thats why the list is longer and will probably grow,)

Just please remember you give himthe gift of reading let him enjoyh books for his age group as long as he can because when you raise a reader they move up really fast and the cuter kids books become too easy too quick. SAve Moby Dick for next summer

and if i might suggest for the parents come October Roger Zaelazny's Night in theLonesome october. 1 chapter for each night of the month.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. Can't believe I forgot about some of the classics (Cricket in Times Square, Charlotte's Web...) and looking forward to some of the ones I never read so they'll be new for me too! Feel free to keep them coming, the chapter reading is going really well!

DD loves Berenstein Bears chapter books. I have also been reading her The Little House on The Prarie books. I am going to start Boxcar Children next. (I was obsessed with these- esp the first book when I was little.)
