Two kids in my son's school have Swine Flu - What would you do??

Just curious what you would do if there was/is swine flu in your child's school. My husband wants me to keep him home. I am kind of undecided. What would you do?

Would you send your child if you heard that one child had the 'regular' flu? There have been 8,000 cases and 11 deaths with swine flu. If your son isn't immunocompromised you likely have nothing to worry about. I would send my children to school.

In my case I would keep them home because my 8yo ds is disabled and if someone sneezes around him it seems he ends up with pneumonia, in the hospital, and having seizures. So yes I would keep them home.

I would send him to school. Remind him to wash his hands, maybe send him with some hand sanitizer or some lysol wipes to wipe his desk and stuff down? I think he'll be fine. We have like 30 something confirmed cases in our county and we're not staying in, just being extra cautious.

Well I myself would keep them home, because I know that the little ones aren't going to be careful and wash their hands, they are kids who want to play and have fun...but there are probably just a few more days left anyway of school...thats just my opinion...Good luck with your decision....

I agree with your concerns and my first thought would be to keep my child home.

That aside, I am confused as to why *you* have to make this choice in the first place?

I mean, from everything I have read and seen on tv, the Center for Disease control feels they need to do everything to "quarantine & contain* this? Why are the two children still in school?

Don't get me wrong, I do NOT mean to give the impression that they should be treated like they have leprosy or the likes, but if these children had Chicken Pox, they wouldn't be allowed to return to school until they were over it simply to keep from spreading it more so and if I am correct, less people die from Chicken Pox now than Swine flu?

One week last year, there was such an outbreak of the "regular" flu, that our county's schools were closed for a couple of days.

I would much rather keep my child home and be thought as "over protective" than to be sorry, but you know, that's just me.

Well I'm sure the kids are not still going to school that has the flu. I think the school will do all they can to protect your child.

Is it confirmed cases of swine flu or other parents just "assuming and talking." I'm sure the school wouldn't allow these kids to be there if they actually had it. I would make sure it's confirmed cases and find out what the school is doing to decontaminate the school. Here in Baltimore they shut down 2 schools in Anne Arundel County the week that all of this broke out because there were "possible unconfirmed cases". The school should worry about what THEY are going to do you should not have to worry about this.

In answer to your question, sorry to ramble like I dd but I would keep my child home. Better safe than sorry. Your child has already been exposed, just like any other germ, we are all actually exposed before that person shows symptoms. Symptoms just don't show up they've already been doing their dirty work. Get her work from school so she doesn't fall behind at the end of the year and let her do her work or you could always ask the school to conference call and she could do classes from home. A friend of mine did that with her daughter when she had the chicken pox after about 3-4 days of laying around and feeling a little better. The phone was tied up all day but it was worth it. She actually did better. Good luck with your decision.

Because you are pregnant, I would say keep them home. I know I was always scared to get sick while pregnant so that's what I would do.

ETA: Whoops, I think I got that wrong! Your siggie confused me!

Anyway, I would find out what steps the school has take and then decide.

My thought is that since they were contagious days before the cases were suspected and even longer than before they were confirmed, your kids were already exposed if they were going to be. JMO That being said, being preggo does a a twist to it. I would probably call my OBGYN and ask them.

Thanks so much for all of your feedback. I sent him to school today. It was a hard decision.

They are confirmed cases. We had a message from the school and they did state that there were two children with it. They are not in school so that is not a worry.

There is no reason to worry that I am pregnant because I am not. But let me tell you that thought scared me!!!

Thanks again for all of your feedback.

I'd keep them home, too. In general I *try* to stick with the philosophy of not worrying about the what-if's. But in this case, there are known swine-flu cases, so that's entirely different. It's like making the decision to get into a car w/a drunk driver. There's a chance something could happen, but there's a good chance you'll get home just fine, too. It's not a chance you'd likely take when you consider the factor that you know the person is drunk.

Anyway, I'd err on the side of caution and keep them home. Missing a week - if it's that long - isn't that big of a deal. I think the schools around here had a 40% absentee rate when there were cases here. I'll bet the family of that assistant principal who died from it in NY wishes he'd chosen to stay home.
